Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ahl al-Qurā (أهل القرى): The people of the towns and cities — specifically referring to the disbelieving communities who rejected their prophets.
  • Ba'sunā (بأسنا): Our severe punishment and divine retribution.
  • Bayātān (بياتًا): At night, suddenly and unexpectedly while they are in their sleep.
  • Nā'imūn (نائمون): Deeply asleep, unaware and heedless of what is about to befall them.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a profound and thought-provoking question to those who persist in disbelief and wrongdoing: Do the people of these towns truly feel secure and safe from Allah's punishment? Are they so arrogant and heedless that they imagine they can escape His justice?

The verse specifically highlights the terrifying possibility that divine punishment may descend upon them at night, while they are fast asleep — at the very moment when they are most vulnerable, most at ease, and least expecting it. Imagine being wrapped in the comfort of your bed, drifting in peaceful slumber, and then suddenly — without any warning — the wrath of Allah descends. There is no time to repent, no chance to escape, no opportunity to even realize what is happening.

This is a powerful reminder that Allah's punishment does not announce itself in advance. It comes when people least expect it, often when they have grown complacent and confident in their worldly security. The people of past nations — 'Ād, Thamūd, and others — were destroyed in similar ways, some while they slept, others while they were engaged in their daily affairs, and still others while they were celebrating and rejoicing.

The question posed here is rhetorical, meant to shake the reader from complacency. It asks: How can anyone who has heard of the fate of previous nations feel safe from Allah's punishment? How can they continue in their disobedience as if they have been guaranteed safety? This sense of false security is one of the greatest deceptions of Satan, who whispers to people that they have plenty of time, that they will repent later, that Allah is forgiving — all while they continue in their sins.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical account — it is a living reminder for every generation, including ours. How many people go to sleep tonight with plans for tomorrow, never knowing whether they will wake up? How many are heedless of their Creator while He continues to provide for them and give them respite?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned us: "The people of Paradise will not regret anything except a day that passed without them remembering Allah." Let this verse awaken your heart. Do not let another night pass without turning to your Lord in repentance. Do not let the comfort of this world deceive you into forgetting the reality of the Hereafter.

Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this warning out of love for us — so that we might return to Him before it is too late. He does not wish to punish us; He wishes for us to succeed. But His justice demands that those who persist in wrongdoing after receiving clear warnings will face the consequences.

So seize this moment. Repent sincerely. Establish your prayers. Read His Book with reflection. And never feel secure from the plan of Allah — for none feels secure from the plan of Allah except the people who are lost. May Allah protect us all and grant us the ability to live as true believers, ever mindful of His presence, ever hopeful of His mercy, and ever prepared for the day we will meet Him.

📜 Verse 95-99 — Al-A'raf

Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease." So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning."
Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?
Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play?
Then did they feel secure from the plan of Allah? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people.
