Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ضُحًى (Duhan): Forenoon, the early part of the day when the sun has risen high and the morning is well underway.
- يَلْعَبُونَ (Yal'abun): Playing, amusing themselves, being heedlessly engrossed in worldly distractions and pastimes.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After warning the people of the towns about the punishment that could strike them at night while they slept, Allah now poses another profound question: "Do the people of the towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come to them in the forenoon while they are playing?"
This verse highlights a critical aspect of human heedlessness. The forenoon (duha) is a time when people are most active, engaged in their daily routines, trade, work, and leisure. It is a time of apparent safety and normalcy—the sun is shining, the day is bright, and life seems to be proceeding as usual. Yet, Allah reminds us that His punishment is not bound by time or circumstance. It can strike at the very moment when people feel most secure and are deeply absorbed in the distractions of worldly life.
The word "playing" here is not limited to literal games; it encompasses all forms of heedless engagement—busying oneself with worldly affairs while forgetting the Hereafter, neglecting the commands of Allah, and turning away from the warnings of the messengers. It describes a state of mind where one is so engrossed in the temporary pleasures and pursuits of this world that the thought of accountability and divine retribution never crosses the heart.
Allah specifically mentions these two times—night and forenoon—because they represent the extremes of human vulnerability and heedlessness. At night, people are asleep and unaware; in the forenoon, they are awake but distracted. In both states, the arrival of punishment would be most terrifying and shocking, precisely because it comes when people least expect it.
This verse serves as a powerful wake-up call. It asks us directly: Do you feel so secure in your worldly engagements that you forget the One who controls all affairs? Do your daily routines, your business deals, your entertainment, and your social gatherings make you oblivious to the reality that death and accountability can come at any moment?
The beauty of this divine address is that it is not merely a threat—it is an invitation to reflection. It calls upon the believer to live with awareness, to balance worldly responsibilities with spiritual consciousness, and to never let the "play" of this life overshadow the seriousness of our ultimate purpose. The One who warns us of danger is the same One who loves us and desires our safety. His warnings are mercy in disguise, guiding us to a life of mindfulness, gratitude, and sincere devotion.
So, dear reader, let this verse stir your heart. Do not be among those who are caught off guard. Instead, be among those who remember Allah in the morning and the evening, who see every moment of this life as an opportunity to draw closer to Him, and who understand that true security lies not in the absence of trials, but in the peace that comes from being with Allah. For indeed, the greatest loss is to be playing when the call of truth arrives—and the greatest success is to be awake, aware, and prepared.
