Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fasl (الفصل): The separation and decisive judgment between creation—distinguishing truth from falsehood, the righteous from the wicked, and the blessed from the doomed.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the answer to the question posed earlier: "For which day were the messengers appointed?" The response is: "For the Day of Separation" — the Day when Allah will judge between all of creation with absolute justice. On that Day, the truth will be fully distinguished from falsehood, the believer from the disbeliever, and the people of Paradise from the people of Hellfire. It is the Day when every soul will be recompensed exactly for what it earned, with no injustice whatsoever. The messengers were delayed and their nations were given respite so that all matters could be settled on this appointed Day—a Day of decisive judgment that will leave no ambiguity, no excuse, and no appeal.
This Day is described elsewhere in the Qur'an as the Day when the heavens are cleft asunder, the stars are extinguished, the mountains are scattered like dust, and the messengers are gathered at an appointed time. It is a Day of immense terror and gravity, yet for the believers, it is a Day of joy and triumph, for they will enter into the eternal bliss of Paradise. For the disbelievers, however, it is a Day of utter ruin and regret.
A Call to Reflection:
O human being! This Day of Separation is not a distant myth or a mere story—it is a certain reality that will undoubtedly come to pass. Every moment you live, every breath you take, is a step closer to that Day. The wise person is the one who prepares for it before it arrives, while the negligent one is deceived by the fleeting pleasures of this world. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent messengers and revealed scriptures to warn us and guide us, so that we may not be among the losers on that Day. Let this reminder awaken your heart: the Day of Separation is coming, and on it, the truth will be laid bare for all to see. Will you be among those who rejoice, or among those who weep? The choice is yours, and the time to decide is now—before that Day when no soul shall avail another, and all affairs will return to Allah, the Just, the Wise.
