For what Day was it postponed?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أُجِّلَت (ujjilat): Was postponed, delayed, or appointed to a specific time.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the previous verses described the terrifying cosmic upheavals—the extinguishing of the stars, the splitting of the sky, the mountains being blown away like dust—this verse poses a profound rhetorical question: "For what day were the messengers appointed?"

The answer is implied with awe and gravity: they were appointed for the Day of Judgment—the Day of Decision and Separation between all of creation. On that day, the messengers will bear witness over their nations, and justice will be established in its most absolute form. The question is posed not to seek information, but to magnify the importance of that day in the hearts and minds of the listeners. It is as if the heavens and earth are asked: do you know the weight of what is coming? The delay of the messengers' testimony is not a delay of negligence, but a delay of divine wisdom, so that every soul may complete its journey of trial, and so that no one may claim they were not warned.

This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of accountability. The messengers—those chosen by Allah, the most noble of creation—are themselves waiting for that day to fulfill their duty of testimony. How then can we, as ordinary human beings, live heedlessly as if there is no reckoning? The question stirs the heart to reflect: are we preparing for that day when the truth will be laid bare, and every deed, great or small, will be brought forth?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine the scene: the universe collapsing, the stars losing their light, and the messengers of Allah—Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all)—standing in wait. For what are they waiting? For the day when justice will be served, when the oppressed will be vindicated, and when every soul will meet the consequence of its choices. This is not a distant myth; it is the certain reality that gives meaning to our existence. Let this verse awaken in you a renewed commitment to truth, sincerity, and the worship of the One who created you. For that day is nearer to each of us than we think—and the wise are those who prepare for it with righteous deeds and a repentant heart.
