Surah Al-Mursalat — Verse 14

• Al-Fasl (الفصل): The separation and decisive judgment between all of creation — between the righteous and the wicked, between truth and falsehood.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the terrifying signs of that Day — the extinguishing of the stars, the splitting of the heavens, the mountains being blown away like dust, and the messengers being appointed to a fixed time — the question arises: for what tremendous day were the messengers delayed? The answer comes: for the Day of Decision and Judgment between all creatures.

Then Allah addresses the Prophet ﷺ — and through him, all of humanity — with a rhetorical question that magnifies the enormity of that Day: *"And what will make you know what the Day of Decision is?"* This is a style of emphasis in Arabic that means: you have never witnessed anything like it, and no description can fully convey its terror and awe. It is a day whose reality surpasses human imagination — a day when every soul will be held accountable for what it sent forth, when every hidden deed will be brought to light, and when the final justice of the Almighty will be established without injustice to anyone.

The repetition of this question in the following verses further intensifies the warning, leaving the listener in no doubt that this Day is real, imminent, and beyond all measure of human comprehension.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse shakes the heart and awakens the soul. Allah is telling us: you cannot even begin to grasp the magnitude of that Day — yet it is coming, surely and swiftly. The One who informed us of it is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise, who does not speak from desire. So let this awareness transform your life: every prayer you offer, every kindness you extend, every sin you avoid — these are the investments that will shine for you on that Day when nothing else will avail. The Qur'an does not leave us in fear alone; it opens the door of mercy, reminding us that the same Day of Decision is the Day when the believers will be admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow, forever secure. So race towards that success now, before the dust of this world settles and the true morning breaks.
