Word Meanings:

  • Hal atāka (هَلْ أَتَاكَ): "Has there come to you" — meaning, has the news reached you?
  • Ḥadīth (حَدِيثُ): The account, story, or tidings of a matter.
  • Al-Junūd (الْجُنُود): The armies or hosts — referring to the gathered forces of the disbelieving nations who united against the truth and their prophets.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a rhetorical question that carries profound weight: "Has the story of the armies reached you?" The word "hal" here is not a question of uncertainty, but rather a means of drawing attention and magnifying the importance of what follows. It is as if Allah is saying: "Has the tremendous news of these mighty hosts come to you?"

The "armies" refer to the great gatherings of disbelievers who banded together to oppose the truth and fight against the messengers of Allah. These were powerful nations with immense resources, vast numbers, and formidable strength — yet their power was nothing before the might of their Creator. The verse sets the stage for what follows in the coming verses, where Allah mentions Pharaoh and Thamud specifically as examples of these armies.

This rhetorical question serves multiple purposes. It consoles the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions, reminding them that they are not facing anything new — previous nations had also united against the prophets, yet the outcome was always the same: the truth prevailed, and the falsehood was destroyed. It also warns the disbelievers of Makkah that their plots and gatherings against Islam will meet the same fate as those who came before them.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse! Allah is telling His beloved Prophet — and through him, all of us — that the story of those who opposed the truth is not hidden or unknown. It is a lesson written in the pages of history, preserved for those who have hearts to understand. When you see the forces of falsehood gathering today, remember that they are but a repeat of what has come before. Their end is already written in the decree of Allah.

This verse fills the believer's heart with tranquility and certainty. The armies of falsehood may seem overwhelming in number, but Allah is the Protector of His religion and the Helper of His righteous servants. So take heart, stand firm upon the truth, and know that the same Allah who destroyed the mighty armies of old is alive today, watching over His believers. The story of those armies is not merely history — it is a living reminder that no power on earth can stand against the will of Allah. Let this verse strengthen your faith and increase your trust in your Lord, for His promise is true, and His victory is near.
