[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fir'awn (Pharaoh): The title of the tyrannical ruler of Egypt during the time of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, who claimed divinity and rejected Allah's message.
  • Thamud: An ancient Arab tribe who lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr (between Hijaz and Tabuk). They were sent Prophet Salih, peace be upon him, but they arrogantly rejected him and killed the miraculous she-camel.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the previous one, identifying who "the hosts" (al-junood) were that Allah referred to when He said: "Have you not received the news of the hosts — of Pharaoh and Thamud?" (Al-Buruj: 17-18).

Allah, Glorified and Exalted, specifies here that these mighty, powerful nations were none other than Pharaoh — the oppressive tyrant who claimed divinity for himself and led his people in arrogance and disbelief — and Thamud — the people of Prophet Salih, who were given extraordinary strength and carved their homes out of mountains, yet they rejected their prophet and transgressed beyond all bounds.

By mentioning these two great civilizations, Allah is drawing a powerful lesson for the disbelievers of Makkah and for all of humanity: these nations possessed far greater power, wealth, and military might than the Quraysh or any other people. They had formidable armies, advanced construction, and unmatched dominance over their lands. Yet, when they opposed their messengers and persisted in disbelief, Allah's punishment overtook them completely — none of their power, armies, or fortifications could protect them from His wrath.

The lesson here is profound: if such mighty nations could not escape Allah's punishment, then no one can. The disbelievers who reject the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ should take heed — their power is far less than that of Pharaoh and Thamud, and Allah's ability to seize them is absolute.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this divine reminder. The stories of Pharaoh and Thamud are not mere legends of the past — they are eternal lessons preserved in the Qur'an for every generation. These nations had everything that people today still chase: power, luxury, military strength, and grand architecture. Yet, when they placed their arrogance above the truth and rejected their Creator, all their worldly achievements became worthless in an instant.

Today, as you read these words, know that Allah, the Almighty, is watching over all — nothing escapes His knowledge, and no power on earth can stand against His will. This is an invitation to you: don't let your wealth, status, or abilities make you forget your Lord. The same Allah who destroyed Pharaoh and Thamud is the One who gives life and takes it away. He is the Most Merciful, and He has opened the door of repentance for you — so turn to Him before it is too late, and let the lessons of the past guide you to the eternal success of the Hereafter.
