Word Meanings:

  • Al-Tariq (الطارق): The "night-comer" or "morning star" — a star that appears at night and shines brightly, piercing the darkness with its light. The word is derived from the root *t-r-q*, which conveys the idea of striking or knocking, because this star "knocks" at the door of the night with its radiant appearance.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, poses a profound rhetorical question: *"And what will make you know what the night-comer is?"* This is a stylistic device in the Qur'an that magnifies the subject and draws the listener's attention to its immense significance. It is as if to say: "You, O human, with all your knowledge and perception, cannot fully grasp the true nature and grandeur of this celestial body that pierces the night sky."

The verse serves to elevate the status of this star, making it a sign of Allah's power and wisdom. The night-comer is not merely a distant light; it is a testament to the Creator's perfect design — a luminous body that appears in the darkness, guiding travelers, marking time, and adorning the heavens. Yet, its full reality, its composition, its purpose, and the wisdom behind its creation are matters that surpass human comprehension. This rhetorical question instills a sense of awe and humility, reminding the reader that the universe is filled with wonders that point to a greater, all-knowing Creator.

The verse also carries a deeper spiritual resonance. Just as the night-comer shines through the darkness of the night, so too does divine guidance shine through the darkness of ignorance and heedlessness. The believer is invited to reflect on this celestial sign and recognize the hand of Allah in every corner of existence, drawing closer to Him through contemplation and gratitude.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful invitation to ponder the universe around us. The Qur'an repeatedly calls upon humanity to look at the heavens, the stars, and the natural world — not as random phenomena, but as signs of a purposeful and merciful Creator. When you gaze at the night sky and see a star gleaming in the vast darkness, let it remind you of the One who set it in its place, who sustains it, and who has power over all things. This reflection softens the heart, strengthens faith, and draws the soul toward its Lord. Islam is not a religion of blind following; it is a faith of deep thought and reflection. The more you contemplate the signs of Allah, the more you realize His greatness and the more your love for Him grows. Let every star, every dawn, and every night be a reminder that you are never alone — your Creator is always near, watching over you with mercy and wisdom.
