Word Meanings:

  • Waleejah (وَلِيجَةً): A close confidant, an intimate advisor, or a trusted ally from outside one's own circle—specifically here, taking disbelievers as inner companions and sharing secrets with them.
  • Lammana (وَلَمَّا): "Not yet"—indicating that something has not occurred up to the present moment.
  • Hasibtum (حَسِبْتُمْ): You thought or assumed.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers! Do you truly imagine that Allah will leave you unchecked, without testing your faith and sincerity? That would contradict the very purpose of your proclamation of faith. The established way of Allah (Sunnatullah) is that His servants are tried and purified through trials, so that the truthful may be distinguished from the false.

The verse addresses those who hesitated when fighting was commanded, and it poses a rhetorical question: Did you think you would be left alone—neither commanded to strive nor tested—so that Allah would not make evident who among you truly strives in His cause? This "knowledge" is not about Allah's eternal, all-encompassing knowledge—for nothing is hidden from Him—but rather about making that knowledge manifest in the world, so that the creation may witness who is sincere and who is not.

The test is twofold: First, that you engage in jihad (struggle) in His path with your wealth, your words, and your lives. Second, that you do not take, besides Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, any intimate allies (waleejah) from among the disbelievers—those with whom you share your secrets, your plans, and your inner trust. Such alliances would reveal a weakness in faith and a divided loyalty.

The verse concludes with a profound reassurance: "And Allah is All-Aware of what you do." Nothing escapes His knowledge—not your hidden intentions, not your outward actions, not the secrets you keep in your hearts. He knows whether your striving is for His sake alone or for worldly gains, and He will reward you accordingly.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful reminder that your faith is not a mere claim—it is a living reality that must be proven through action and sincerity. Allah does not burden you with trials to harm you, but to elevate you, to purify your ranks, and to draw you closer to Him. When you face difficulties in your life, know that they are part of this divine testing—so embrace them with patience and steadfastness.

Let this verse also be a warning: your closest companions shape your heart and your path. Choose as your inner circle those who share your faith, who encourage you in goodness, and who safeguard your religion. Do not entrust your secrets to those who do not wish you well, for the believer is wise and discerning.

And always remember: Allah sees everything you do, whether in public or in private. Let this awareness fill you with hope—for He rewards the sincere—and with caution—for He knows the insincere. Strive, therefore, to be among those whose jihad is pure, whose loyalty is undivided, and whose hearts are devoted entirely to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.

📜 Verse 14-18 — At-Tawbah

Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts of a believing people
And remove the fury in the believers' hearts. And Allah turns in forgiveness to whom He wills; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Do you think that you will be left [as you are] while Allah has not yet made evident those among you who strive [for His cause] and do not take other than Allah, His Messenger and the believers as intimates? And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.
The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.
