Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse exposes a grave deviation among the People of the Book—the Jews and the Christians—in their understanding of loyalty and worship. They took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah. This does not mean they literally worshipped them with rituals of bowing and prostrating, but rather they obeyed them blindly in matters that contradicted the commands of Allah. When their scholars legalized what Allah had forbidden or forbade what Allah had permitted, they submitted to their rulings without question, making them partners in legislation—a right that belongs exclusively to Allah, the Sole Creator and Sovereign.
Furthermore, the Christians took the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, as a deity and worshipped him alongside Allah, despite the fact that Jesus himself was a noble prophet and servant of Allah, who never commanded anyone to worship him. This was a profound distortion of the message he brought.
Yet, Allah did not command them—nor any of His creation—except to worship one single God, the only true Deity worthy of worship. He is Allah, the One, the Self-Sufficient, the Eternal. There is no god but Him, and He is far exalted above the partners and associates they falsely attribute to Him.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How beautiful is this verse in clarifying the pure, untainted message of all the prophets! From Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all)—every single messenger called to the same truth: worship Allah alone, with sincere devotion, and submit to His divine will. No prophet ever claimed divinity, and no righteous scholar ever asked to be followed in opposition to Allah's commands.
Dear reader, reflect on the mercy of Allah in sending this clear guidance. He did not leave us in darkness, but illuminated our path with the light of revelation. He calls you today to free yourself from all false allegiances and to anchor your heart solely on Him—the One who created you, sustains you, and will return you to Him. When you worship Allah alone, you find true peace, genuine dignity, and a purpose that transcends this temporary world.
Let this verse be a reminder to every Muslim: our loyalty belongs to Allah first and foremost. We love our scholars and respect our leaders, but we never elevate them above the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him). We accept what aligns with divine revelation and gently reject what contradicts it, for Allah alone is the Legislator, and His word is the ultimate truth.
Praise be to Allah, the One and Only, far above what the polytheists and deviators claim. May He keep us firm upon the straight path of pure monotheism, and may He grant us the wisdom to distinguish truth from falsehood, and the courage to follow His guidance in every aspect of our lives.
