The Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, reflect on the profound truth embedded in this verse. If those hypocrites had truly and sincerely intended to march out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) for the blessed struggle in Allah's cause, they would have made tangible preparations—gathering provisions, saddling their mounts, and equipping themselves for the hardships of the journey. But their claim was hollow, for their hearts were devoid of faith and their intentions were corrupt.
However, the deeper reality is that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knew that their presence would only bring harm to the Muslim ranks—spreading discord, weakening resolve, and sowing doubt. Therefore, He detested their mobilization and their setting forth. Consequently, He made the idea of going out heavy and burdensome upon their hearts, so they became sluggish and reluctant. Their own laziness and fear became the very means by which Allah thwarted their participation. And it was said to them—through the tongue of the Prophet (peace be upon him), in accordance with the divine decree—"Stay behind with those who stay behind"—meaning, remain with the excused ones: the sick, the weak, the blind, the women, and the children, who are unable to fight.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every sincere Muslim: Allah judges us by the sincerity of our hearts and the truthfulness of our intentions. When a believer truly desires good, Allah opens the doors of ability and facilitation. But when a person's heart is diseased with hypocrisy or laziness, Allah leaves them to their own devices, and their inaction becomes a testament to their inner state. So, purify your intentions, O servants of Allah, and be truthful in your words and deeds. For Allah does not look at your forms or your claims, but at your hearts and your actions. And know that when Allah loves a servant, He grants them the success to do good and to be among the foremost in righteous deeds. Do not be like those who were content with the easy chair of comfort while the call to sacrifice rang out—for the honor of this world and the Hereafter lies in striving, not in sitting back.
