Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, Allah—in His infinite wisdom and mercy—chose to keep the hypocrites away from joining you in the campaign of Tabūk, and this verse reveals the profound reason behind that divine decision. Had these hypocrites gone out with you, they would have added nothing to your strength or numbers except corruption and disorder. Their very presence would have been a source of decay, spreading doubt, fear, and confusion among the ranks of the believers.
They would have rushed through your midst, moving swiftly between your rows, sowing the seeds of discord through slander, backbiting, and spreading false rumors. Their goal was clear: to seek your fitnah—to shake your resolve, weaken your unity, and turn you away from the path of jihad in the cause of Allah. They wanted to see you divided, distracted, and defeated from within.
And among you, O believers, there were those who would listen to them—people who might be swayed by their poisonous words, who would accept their lies and spread them further, causing even greater harm. This is a reminder that the enemy does not only attack from outside; sometimes the greatest danger comes from those who infiltrate and undermine from within.
But Allah, the All-Knowing, is fully aware of these wrongdoers. Nothing of their schemes, their hidden intentions, or their corrupt hearts escapes His knowledge. He sees through their hypocrisy and knows exactly what they plot in the darkness of their souls. And He will certainly hold them accountable for their injustice.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a profound lesson for every believer across time. It teaches us that Allah protects His faithful servants from harm, even when they do not realize it. When the hypocrites were kept from joining the believers, it was not a loss—it was a mercy. How often do we complain when certain people are not with us, not realizing that their absence is a blessing from Allah?
It also warns us to be vigilant about our own hearts. Are we among those who eagerly listen to gossip and slander? Do we accept rumors without verification and spread them among our brothers and sisters? The believers are described in the Qur'an as those who verify news before acting upon it, and who guard their tongues from causing division.
Let this verse inspire you to be a force of unity, not division. Be a builder of bonds, not a breaker of them. And know with certainty that Allah sees every injustice, every hidden scheme, and every wrong intention—and He is the Best of Judges. Trust in His wisdom, for He knows what is best for you, even when you do not.
