The Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a profound truth about human nature and faith. Only those who truly lack belief in Allah and the Last Day would come to you, O Prophet, seeking permission to stay behind from jihad — from striving in the path of Allah. Why? Because faith is not merely a word uttered by the tongue; it is a conviction that moves the heart and impels the limbs to action. When a person genuinely believes in Allah — in His promises, His rewards, and His justice — and when they truly believe in the Last Day, where every deed will be weighed and every intention exposed, they do not hesitate to sacrifice. They rush toward what pleases their Lord.
But these hypocrites — their hearts are not anchored in certainty. They have been struck by doubt (irtābat), a deep-seated suspicion about the truth of what you have brought. Their hearts are not at peace with the message of Islam, nor with its commands and prohibitions. And because of this inner sickness, they are in a constant state of hesitation — "they waver in their doubt" — never fully committing, never fully rejecting. They are like a ship tossed between two waves: one moment they appear to believe, the next they retreat into disbelief. They cannot find firm ground because their foundation is not faith but uncertainty.
This verse is a mirror for every soul. It teaches us that the strength of our actions reflects the strength of our conviction. When we truly believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment, we do not seek excuses to avoid good deeds — we seek opportunities to perform them. We do not ask, "Must I go?" but rather, "Where can I go next?" The believer's heart is alive with hope and awe; the hypocrite's heart is dead with doubt and hesitation.
So let this be a call to each of us: examine your heart. If you find hesitation in doing good, if you find yourself making excuses to avoid sacrifice, then know that the root is a weakened faith. Strengthen it by renewing your knowledge of Allah, by reflecting on the reality of the Last Day, and by surrounding yourself with sincere believers. For when faith fills the heart, action becomes a joy, and sacrifice becomes a privilege — not a burden to be avoided.
