Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nāṣiyah (نَاصِيَة): The forelock or front part of the head — a symbol of control, honor, and leadership in Arabic culture.
- Kādhibah (كَاذِبَة): Lying — false in speech and claims.
- Khāṭi’ah (خَاطِئَة): Sinful/erroneous — wrong in actions and deeds, deliberately committing mistakes.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the forelock of a person who embodies falsehood and sin — referring specifically to Abu Jahl, one of the fiercest enemies of Islam. The description is striking: it attributes lying and erring to the forelock itself, not just to the person. This is a powerful rhetorical device in Arabic, where the part of the body that leads a person’s actions is held accountable for what it directs. The forelock is the front of the head, the part that leads when one advances — and here it is described as lying in what it utters and sinful in what it does.
The deeper meaning is that this person’s entire being — from the very front of his head, the seat of his will and intention — is saturated with falsehood and error. His words are lies, and his deeds are transgressions. He uses his intellect, his position, and his influence not for truth, but to oppose the worship of Allah and to harm the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The verse serves as a severe warning: such a person will be seized by that very forelock on the Day of Judgment and cast into the Fire.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that our limbs, our faculties, and even the very front of our heads will bear witness against us if we use them in falsehood and sin. How beautiful it is when a person uses their intellect, their speech, and their actions in obedience to Allah — when the forelock that leads them is one of truth, sincerity, and righteousness!
Imagine standing before Allah on the Day when every part of your body will testify to what you did. Let this verse inspire you to make your entire being — from your head to your feet — a vessel of goodness. Let your words be truthful, your actions be righteous, and your life be a living proof of faith. The one who opposes the truth will ultimately be humiliated, but the one who submits to Allah and draws near to Him through prayer and obedience will be honored and elevated.
So, dear believer, hold fast to your prayers, for they are your connection to your Lord. Do not let the mockery or opposition of anyone deter you. Allah sees everything, and He will defend His righteous servants. Prostrate to your Lord and draw closer to Him — for in that closeness lies your ultimate victory and peace.
