Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): Absolutely not! A stern rebuke and denial.
  • La-in lam yantahi (لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ): If he does not desist and stop.
  • La-nasfaʿan (لَنَسْفَعًا): We will surely seize and drag forcefully.
  • Bin-nāṣiyah (بِالنَّاصِيَةِ): By the forelock — the front part of the hair on the head.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The verse delivers a powerful and decisive warning to the one who persists in arrogance and transgression — specifically referring to Abu Jahl, who dared to forbid the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from praying to his Lord. After exposing the folly of such behavior, Allah now issues a stern threat: "Absolutely not!" — meaning, the matter is not as this ignorant tyrant imagines. If he does not cease his hostility, his mockery, and his attempts to block the worship of Allah, then Allah Himself will seize him by the forelock — the very front of his head — and drag him forcefully toward the punishment of Hellfire. This is not a metaphor of weakness; it is a declaration of absolute divine power. The forelock, which a person holds in pride and uses to assert dominance, will become the very means by which he is humiliated and subdued. Allah will take him with might and force, pulling him to his ultimate disgrace. This is a clear promise that no matter how powerful or influential a person may be, they cannot escape the grasp of their Creator.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: never fear the arrogance of the oppressors, for their power is nothing before the might of Allah. The one who stands in prayer, humbling himself before his Lord, is under divine protection. Allah sees every act of aggression and every attempt to suppress the truth, and He will not leave His servants forsaken. The tyrant may gather his council, his supporters, and his resources, but Allah's angels of punishment are far greater in number and power. So take heart, O believer — your duty is to remain steadfast in worship and obedience, drawing closer to Allah through your prayers, for He is the One who defends His righteous servants. And let this verse be a warning to all who oppose the truth: your forelock is in the Hand of Allah, and He can humble you in an instant. There is no refuge from Him except in turning back to Him in repentance and submission.
