Word Meanings:

  • Az-Zabaniyah (الزَّبَانِيَة): The stern and severe angels appointed over Hellfire. The term is derived from *zabn*, which means "to push" or "to drive away," reflecting their role in forcefully driving the wicked into punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this powerful verse, Allah addresses the arrogance of Abu Jahl, a leader of Quraysh who dared to threaten and hinder the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from praying to his Lord. When Abu Jahl boasted that he would summon his clan and allies to confront the Prophet, Allah responds with a declaration of absolute might: "We will call the Zabaniyah"—the formidable angels of punishment who never disobey Allah's command and execute His will without hesitation.

This is a direct challenge to the false confidence of the oppressor. Abu Jahl thought his worldly supporters, his tribe, and his status would protect him. But Allah reminds him—and all who read this—that no human alliance, no matter how strong, can stand against the forces of the Almighty. The Zabaniyah are not merely angels; they are the embodiment of divine justice, unyielding and irresistible. They do not tire, they do not falter, and they do not fail.

The verse also carries a profound reassurance for the believer: the Prophet (peace be upon him) was alone, seemingly powerless against the might of Quraysh, yet Allah assured him that the true power lies with the Creator. The threats of the oppressors are hollow compared to the reality of Allah's dominion. When the enemies of truth gather their forces, Allah gathers His—and His forces are beyond human imagination.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse is a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us that when we stand for truth and worship Allah sincerely, we are never truly alone. The same Allah who defended His Prophet will defend His righteous servants. It also serves as a stern warning to those who oppose the message of Islam: your power, wealth, and supporters will not avail you on the Day when the Zabaniyah are summoned. No council, no army, and no worldly influence can shield anyone from the justice of Allah.

Let this verse strengthen your heart when you face opposition for your faith. Remember that the might of Allah surpasses all might, and His angels stand ready to execute His command. So, hold firm to your prayers, remain steadfast in your worship, and draw closer to your Lord—for He is the Best of Protectors, and His victory is near.
