- Wa-qtarib (وَاقْتَرِب): "And draw near" — meaning to seek closeness to Allah through obedience and worship.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a decisive and powerful response to the arrogance of Abu Jahl, who had threatened to step on the neck of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was praying. The command is clear and unambiguous: "No, absolutely not! Do not obey him." This is not merely a prohibition of obedience — it is a declaration that the threats and schemes of the oppressor are utterly meaningless in the face of Allah's command.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) is being instructed to completely disregard the words and actions of this tyrant. Abu Jahl had ordered him to stop praying, but Allah commands the opposite: "And prostrate, and draw near." This is a beautiful and profound shift — instead of focusing on the enemy's threats, the believer is told to focus entirely on Allah. The more the oppressor tries to block the path to Allah, the closer the believer should draw to Him.
The prostration (sujood) mentioned here is not just a physical act — it is the ultimate symbol of submission, humility, and closeness to the Creator. When a servant places their forehead on the ground before Allah, they are at their absolute nearest point to Him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself said: *"The closest a servant comes to his Lord is while he is prostrating"* (Sahih Muslim). So this verse is a divine invitation: the way to overcome oppression and hostility is not through retaliation or fear, but through increased devotion and proximity to Allah.
This verse carries an eternal lesson for every believer: when the world pressures you to abandon your faith, your prayer, or your principles, the answer remains the same — "Do not obey them, prostrate, and draw near." The more they push you away from Allah, the closer you should run to Him. Your sujood is your strength; your prayer is your fortress; and your closeness to Allah is your ultimate victory.
So, dear believer, whenever you face opposition for your faith — whether from family, society, or any authority — remember this verse. Do not let anyone silence your worship or weaken your connection with your Creator. Instead, increase your prostration, increase your devotion, and know that every time you lower your head in sujood, you are rising in rank with Allah. This is the path of the Prophets, and it is the path of true success.
