Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • إِنَّ (Inna): Indeed, truly — an emphatic particle affirming the certainty of what follows.
  • إِلَى رَبِّكَ (Ilā Rabbika): To your Lord — referring to Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all.
  • الرُّجْعَى (Ar-Ruj'ā): The return, the final destination, the homecoming.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse, though brief in words, carries a profound and decisive message: the ultimate return of every soul is to its Lord. After the previous verses described the arrogant and rebellious human who, when he sees himself self-sufficient, transgresses all bounds, this verse comes as a powerful reminder and a firm warning. It declares that no matter how wealthy, powerful, or independent a person may feel in this worldly life, the final journey is not to a grave that ends everything — rather, it is a return to Allah Himself. This return is not merely a physical resurrection, but a return to His justice, His mercy, and His reckoning. Every deed, whether hidden or public, whether small or great, will be brought forth on that Day, and every soul will be rewarded or punished exactly as it deserves. The verse addresses the Prophet (peace be upon him) directly — "to your Lord" — as a comfort to him against the arrogance of the disbelievers, and it addresses every human being indirectly, reminding them that the arrogant will not escape, and the oppressed will not be forgotten.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and ponder this simple yet staggering truth: your life is not a random accident, and your existence is not without purpose. The One who created you from a clinging clot, who taught you by the pen, and who guided you through the darkest stages of your development — He is the One to whom you will return. This return is not a threat to frighten you, but a promise to give you hope and direction. If you have erred, this is your chance to turn back before the final return. If you have been blessed with wealth or power, let this verse humble you, for all that you possess is a trust from Allah, and you will be asked about it. If you have been wronged, let this verse console you, for justice is guaranteed with the Most Just of Judges. The road back to Allah is always open — through sincere repentance, through prayer, through kindness to others, and through submission to His will. Do not wait until the return is forced upon you; rather, return to Him willingly, with a heart full of love and gratitude. For indeed, the ultimate success is for those who remember this return and prepare for it with good deeds.
