Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • رآه (ra'ahu): Here, it means "he saw himself" or "he perceived himself," i.e., he came to believe and know with certainty.
  • استغنى (istaghna): He became self-sufficient, feeling no need for Allah, due to wealth, status, power, or worldly possessions.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals a profound truth about human nature: when a person attains wealth, power, or any form of worldly success, they often fall into arrogance and transgression. The verse states that the reason for this overstepping of bounds is that the person "sees himself as self-sufficient"—meaning he believes he has no need for Allah, nor for anyone else. This false sense of independence fills him with pride, making him forget his Creator, his own weakness, and the reality that everything he owns is merely a trust from Allah.

The verse serves as a stern warning: this attitude of arrogance, born from perceived self-sufficiency, leads a person to exceed the limits set by Allah. He begins to oppress others, reject guidance, and act as though he is accountable to no one. Yet, the ultimate reality is that every soul will return to its Lord, and every deed—whether good or evil—will be met with perfect justice. No amount of wealth, status, or power will shield anyone from that reckoning.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: is there any wealth that can last forever? Is there any power that can defy death? The very breath you take is a gift from Allah, and the moment you feel self-sufficient is the moment you are most in need of His mercy. True success lies not in accumulating the world, but in humility before the One who owns everything. Let this verse be a reminder to guard your heart against arrogance, and to turn to Allah in gratitude and submission—for He is the Rich, and we are all in absolute need of Him, every single moment.
