Surah Al-'Alaq — Verse 9

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse opens a powerful and striking address from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), saying: *"Have you seen the one who forbids?"* The question is rhetorical, meant to highlight the sheer audacity and arrogance of a specific man — Abu Jahl — who dared to forbid a servant of Allah from worshipping his Lord. The verse points to the astonishing reality that a human being, weak and dependent on Allah, would try to stand in the way of another human being's connection to his Creator.

The one being forbidden here is the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself, who was praying at the Kaaba. Abu Jahl, swollen with pride and arrogance, threatened him and tried to stop him from performing the prayer. The verse calls attention to this behavior with a tone of wonder and rebuke: how could anyone, knowing that Allah sees all, dare to prevent another from bowing in submission to the Almighty?

This verse is the opening of a series of verses that expose the ugly reality of those who oppose the truth and try to block others from the path of righteousness. It invites the reader to reflect: who is this person who forbids? What gives him the right? And what will be his end?

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim. It reminds us that there will always be people who try to stop others from worshipping Allah — sometimes through mockery, sometimes through threats, and sometimes through open hostility. But the believer must remain steadfast, knowing that Allah sees everything. No one can truly prevent a sincere heart from reaching its Lord. The prayer, the connection with Allah, is a treasure that no tyrant can take away. So hold fast to your worship, and let no one — no matter how powerful or arrogant — turn you away from the sweetness of standing before your Creator. For Allah is with those who are patient, and He sees every deed, whether hidden or open.
