Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ma adraaka (What will make you know): An expression of awe and emphasis, highlighting the immense magnitude and terror of the matter being described.
- Hiyah (It is): A pronoun referring back to "Hāwiyah" (the Abyss/the Fire) mentioned in the preceding verse.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After describing the Hāwiyah — the blazing Abyss that is the final destination for those whose scales of good deeds are light — Allah poses this rhetorical question to His Messenger (peace be upon him): "And what will make you know what it is?"
This question is not seeking information, but rather it is a powerful literary device that serves two purposes. First, it magnifies the horror of this place in the hearts and minds of the listeners, signaling that even the Prophet, despite his noble rank and divine revelation, cannot fully comprehend the terrifying reality of this punishment. If the Prophet himself — the most beloved of creation to Allah — is not given full knowledge of its horrors, then how can ordinary human minds grasp its severity?
Second, it emphasizes that human intellect alone, no matter how advanced or sophisticated, can never truly fathom the realities of the Hereafter. The true nature of the Hāwiyah — its fire, its torment, its darkness, its depths — is beyond human perception and imagination. It is a reality that can only be known through divine revelation, and even then, only partially, as a warning and a mercy to mankind.
This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of awe and reverence for the Day of Judgment. It reminds us that the consequences of our actions are far greater than we can ever imagine — both the rewards of Paradise and the punishments of Hell. The repetition and emphasis in this chapter serve as a wake-up call: do not take this matter lightly, for it is more serious than any human mind can conceive.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, when you hear this verse, let it stir something deep within your soul. The fact that Allah emphasizes the incomprehensibility of this place is itself a mercy — it means that the path to avoiding it is also made clear. Allah has not left us in ignorance; He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and shown us the way to salvation. The question is: will we take heed before it is too late?
The Hāwiyah is real, and its reality is far greater than our imagination. But equally real is Allah's mercy, His forgiveness, and His readiness to accept the repentance of anyone who turns to Him sincerely. Do not let the weight of your sins despair you — rather, let the terror of this warning motivate you to seek His grace while there is still time. Every prayer, every act of kindness, every moment of sincere repentance is a weight added to the scale of your good deeds. Let us strive, then, to make our scales heavy with what truly matters, and seek refuge in Allah from the Hāwiyah that He has so vividly described for our benefit.
