📖 English Meaning

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Fa-ummuhu" – literally "his mother," meaning his abode, refuge, or final destination.
  • "Hawiyah" – a name for Hellfire; it signifies a deep pit or a place of falling and plunging downward, indicating utter ruin and destruction.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse follows the description of the Day of Judgment, when deeds are weighed on the scales. For the one whose good deeds are light and whose evil deeds outweigh them, his ultimate dwelling place will be the Hellfire. The Qur'an describes this fate with a striking and powerful metaphor: "his mother is Hawiyah" – meaning that just as a child finds shelter and security in the embrace of his mother, this person will find his only refuge and final resting place in the abyss of Hell. It is a profound and terrifying image: instead of a nurturing mother, his destination is a bottomless pit of fire and torment. This is not merely a temporary punishment but an eternal abode, a place of no escape and no mercy.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call from the Most Merciful, who warns us out of love and care for His creation. Allah does not wish to punish us; rather, He wants us to succeed and attain eternal bliss. The scales of deeds are set, and every action, word, and intention is weighed with perfect justice. Let this verse inspire you to examine your life today: what is filling your scales? Are you investing in deeds of kindness, prayer, charity, and sincerity? Or are you neglecting your soul with heedlessness and sin? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is vaster than His wrath. Do not wait until the Day when the scales are set and the outcome is sealed. Turn back to your Lord now, and let your mother be not the abyss, but the eternal mercy and gardens of Paradise. The choice is yours, and the time is now.

7فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
He will be in a pleasant life.

But as for one whose scales are light,
9فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ
His refuge will be an abyss.
10وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ
And what can make you know what that is?
