Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ka'asfin (كَعَصْفٍ): The dry, brittle leaves and chaff of a plant or crop — the husk and straw that remains after harvest.
- Ma'kul (مَّأْكُولٍ): That which has been eaten or consumed — specifically, vegetation that has been grazed upon by animals, chewed, and trampled, leaving it crushed and worthless.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After describing how the Lord of the Ka'bah sent flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay to strike the army of the Elephant, this final verse seals their fate with a striking and vivid simile. Allah says: "So He made them like eaten chaff."
Imagine a green, thriving crop — full of life and strength — that is then devoured by cattle. What remains is nothing but dry, broken, scattered husks, trampled underfoot, blown away by the wind, utterly devoid of any value or power. That is precisely what Allah did to Abraha and his mighty army. Despite their elephants, their soldiers, and their overwhelming military might, they were reduced to a state of complete ruin and humiliation. Their bodies were torn apart by the stones, their flesh decayed, and they perished in the most degrading manner — like the leftover scraps of a meal that animals have already consumed.
This simile carries profound lessons. The army of the Elephant came with arrogance, intending to destroy the sacred House of Allah, but their power was nothing before the will of the Almighty. Just as chaff is the most fragile and insignificant part of a plant, so too were their schemes and their strength in the sight of Allah. The verse also highlights the perfect justice of Allah: those who sought to dishonor His sacred sanctuary were themselves dishonored in the most complete way, leaving behind no trace of glory or remembrance — only a lesson for those who reflect.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This short chapter is a timeless reminder of Allah's absolute power and His protection of His religion and His sacred symbols. No matter how mighty the enemy, no matter how advanced their weapons or numerous their ranks, Allah's command overrides all. The same Allah who destroyed the army of the Elephant with tiny birds is alive and watching over His believers today. When you face trials, when the forces of falsehood seem overwhelming, remember that your Lord is the All-Powerful. Place your trust in Him, cling to His Book, and honor His sacred rites — for He has never abandoned His servants who sincerely turn to Him. This story also invites us to reflect on the fleeting nature of worldly power. The army that marched with such pride was gone in an instant, leaving nothing but a cautionary tale. So let us not be deceived by the temporary strength of this world, but rather seek the eternal honor that comes from submission to Allah. And let us thank Him for the greatest blessing of all — the guidance of Islam and the protection of His revelation, which remains preserved and unshaken, just as He promised.
