Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tabbaat (تَبَّتْ): Perished, lost, or came to ruin; also carries the meaning of being cut off from all good.
  • Yadaa (يَدَا): Literally "two hands," but here it refers to the whole person—his wealth, power, and efforts.
  • Abi Lahab (أَبِي لَهَبٍ): The nickname of the Prophet's uncle, Abdul-Uzza ibn Abdul-Muttalib. He was called "Abu Lahab" (father of the flame) due to his handsome, radiant face.
  • Wa Tabba (وَتَبَّ): And he perished—a confirmation and reinforcement of the first statement.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This opening verse of Surah Al-Masad delivers a decisive and powerful declaration against Abu Lahab, the uncle of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Abu Lahab was not just any opponent—he was a close relative who used his position and influence to harm the Prophet, mock his message, and incite others against Islam. Despite the family bond, his hostility was relentless.

The verse states: "May the two hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he himself perish." The mention of "two hands" symbolizes his entire being—his strength, his wealth, his schemes, and everything he relied upon to fight the truth. The first phrase is a supplication (du'a) against him, while the second is an affirmation of what was destined to occur. In other words: May Allah destroy him, and indeed, he was destroyed.

This verse was revealed as a direct response to Abu Lahab's arrogance and enmity. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) called his clan to Islam, Abu Lahab famously retorted, "May you perish! Is this why you gathered us?" Thus, Allah turned that curse back upon him, declaring that it was Abu Lahab himself who would face ruin.

Historically, this prophecy was fulfilled completely. Abu Lahab did not die a natural, honored death—he perished in disgrace, and his legacy became one of shame and loss. His hands—symbolizing his efforts and resources—availed him nothing against the decree of Allah.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It shows that no matter how powerful, wealthy, or well-connected a person may be, their opposition to the truth will ultimately lead to their downfall. Allah defends His Messenger and His religion, and no enemy—however close in kinship or mighty in status—can prevail against Him.

It also teaches us the importance of sincerity and good character. Abu Lahab's tragedy was not merely his disbelief, but his active hostility toward goodness. He had every opportunity to support his nephew, to embrace the truth, and to earn honor in this life and the next. Instead, he chose arrogance and enmity, and his name became synonymous with loss.

For us, the lesson is clear: never let pride, tribal loyalty, or personal interests blind you to the truth. And never underestimate the power of Allah's promise—He who protects His righteous servants and humiliates His enemies. The Quran immortalized Abu Lahab's disgrace, while the Prophet's name is honored by billions. Choose which legacy you wish to leave behind.
