Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • مَا أَغْنَىٰ: "What did his wealth avail him?" – meaning, it did not benefit or protect him at all.
  • مَالُهُ: His wealth and possessions.
  • وَمَا كَسَبَ: What he earned – this includes his children, as well as all worldly gains such as property, status, and influence.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Exalted be He) poses a rhetorical question that carries a profound truth: "What did his wealth and what he earned avail him?" The answer is clear – absolutely nothing. When the punishment of Allah descends, neither abundant riches nor beloved children can shield a person from it. Wealth cannot buy protection, and offspring cannot intercede or divert the divine decree.

This verse refers to Abu Lahab, the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was consumed by his arrogance and hostility toward the message of Islam. He relied on his material resources and social standing, believing they would secure his position and protect him from any consequence. Yet, Allah declares that all his accumulated treasures and achievements were utterly worthless in the face of divine justice. They neither warded off punishment nor brought him any mercy.

The deeper lesson here is a universal one: worldly possessions, no matter how vast, and human accomplishments, no matter how impressive, hold no weight in the Hereafter unless they are accompanied by faith and righteous deeds. A person may spend a lifetime amassing fortunes and building legacies, but when the hour of reckoning comes, only their relationship with Allah will matter.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a gentle reminder for your heart. How often do we place our trust in what we own – our bank accounts, our homes, our careers, our families – as if these are guarantees of security? Yet, the One who gave us all of this can take it away in an instant, and none of it can stand between us and His will.

The true investment is not in the temporary treasures of this world, but in the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter. Spend your wealth in ways that please Allah, raise your children upon righteousness, and build a legacy of good deeds that will accompany you when nothing else can. For on that Day, the only thing that will truly "avail" you is your faith, your sincerity, and your obedience to your Lord.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to see the reality of this life and the success to prepare for the eternal one.
