Word Meanings:
- Kufuwan (كُفُوًا): An equal, equivalent, match, or counterpart — someone or something that resembles another in essence, attributes, or actions.
- Ahad (أَحَدٌ): Anyone, any single being — used here to negate the existence of any entity whatsoever.
Explanation of the Verse:
This final verse of Surah Al-Ikhlas completes the most magnificent description of Allah that was revealed in this short chapter. After establishing that Allah is One, Self-Sufficient, and that He neither begets nor is begotten, this verse seals the matter with an absolute negation: "And there is none equal to Him — not anyone."
This means that no being in all of creation — whether human, angel, jinn, or any other creature — resembles Allah in any way whatsoever. He has no match in His beautiful Names, for His Names belong exclusively to Him. He has no equivalent in His sublime Attributes, for His knowledge, power, mercy, and wisdom are perfect and infinite, while all others are limited and deficient. He has no peer in His Actions, for He alone creates, sustains, gives life, causes death, and manages the affairs of the entire universe without any partner or assistant.
The verse uses a powerful word order in Arabic — placing "kufuwan" (equal) before "ahad" (anyone) — to emphasize the absolute nature of this negation. It is not merely saying "no one is equal to Him," but rather "there is no equal to Him whatsoever, from anyone, in any way, at any time, in any place."
This verse demolishes every form of shirk (associating partners with Allah) — whether it was the polytheists of Makkah who asked the Prophet ﷺ about the lineage of his Lord, or the Christians who claimed Allah has a son, or anyone who imagines that Allah resembles His creation in any aspect. Allah is absolutely unique, utterly transcendent, and completely beyond any comparison.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, when you recite this verse, let it fill your heart with awe and reverence. If Allah has no equal, then He alone deserves your complete devotion, your undivided love, your total trust, and your sincere worship. No one else — no matter how powerful, wealthy, or influential — can harm you or benefit you except by Allah's will. So direct your heart to Him alone.
This verse also teaches you a beautiful lesson in humility: if no one is equal to Allah, then every human being is equal in their servitude to Him. No person is superior to another except through piety and good deeds. So treat all people with fairness and kindness, for you are all equally servants of the One who has no equal.
And know that the One who has no equal is also the One who hears your prayers, knows your struggles, and sees your tears. Call upon Him with certainty, for the One who has no partner or rival is certainly capable of answering you and granting you what is best. Let this verse be a source of strength in your worship and a shield against every form of false devotion.
