Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghāshiyah (غَاشِيَةٌ): A covering calamity or punishment that overwhelms and envelops people completely, leaving no escape.

- Lā yashʿurūn (لَا يَشْعُرُونَ): They do not perceive, sense, or realize what is about to happen.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a profound and thought-provoking question to those who reject the truth: Do they truly feel so secure that they have become oblivious to the possibility of Allah’s punishment descending upon them? The verse mentions two distinct forms of divine retribution that could strike at any moment.
First, there is the *ghāshiyah* — a sweeping punishment that covers and overwhelms, such as a sudden catastrophe, a destructive storm, or a calamity that leaves no corner untouched. This could be a punishment in this very world, one that would engulf them entirely, leaving them helpless and unable to defend themselves.
Second, there is the Hour — the Day of Judgment — which will come upon them *baghtah*, suddenly and without any warning. They will be completely unaware, caught in the midst of their daily routines, their distractions, and their heedlessness. No one knows when that moment will arrive, and no one can prepare for it once it begins.
The verse challenges their false sense of security. How can they live as if they are immune to Allah’s power? How can they persist in disbelief and disobedience while the threat of divine punishment looms over them, both in this life and the next? The question is rhetorical, meant to awaken their hearts and shake them from their complacency.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful reminder. Life is fleeting, and death can come at any moment — in the blink of an eye, without warning. The greatest success lies in turning to Allah now, before it is too late. Do not let the whispers of Satan deceive you into feeling secure, for Allah’s mercy is vast, but His justice is also swift. The door of repentance is open, and the opportunity to return to your Lord exists in every breath you take. Seize it before the inevitable arrives, and let this verse be a wake-up call that transforms your heart and guides your steps toward righteousness.
