Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yu'minu (believes): Here it refers to their acknowledgment of Allah as the Creator and Sustainer.
- Mushrikun (polytheists): Those who associate partners with Allah in worship, such as idols, or attribute to Him a son or equal.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse reveals a profound truth about human nature: most people, even when they acknowledge Allah as their Creator, Sustainer, and the One who gives life and death, still fall into the trap of associating partners with Him in worship. They affirm His existence and His role as the ultimate power behind the universe, yet they direct their acts of worship—prayers, supplications, sacrifices, and devotion—to idols, statues, or other beings alongside Him. Some even claim that He has a son, glorified and exalted is He above what they say.
This is a subtle and dangerous form of deviation. The heart may recognize the truth, but the actions betray that recognition. The verse highlights that mere intellectual belief is not enough; true faith (iman) must be accompanied by pure, exclusive worship of Allah alone. The polytheists of old, like those in the time of Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him), would readily admit that Allah created the heavens and the earth, yet they would still call upon their idols in times of need, seeking intercession or blessings from them.
The verse serves as a stern warning to all who read it: do not let your faith be a partial one. Do not be among those who say "I believe in Allah" but then turn to other sources for help, guidance, or salvation—whether those be people, wealth, status, or superstitions. True faith demands that your heart, your tongue, and your limbs all submit to Allah alone, with no partner in any aspect of worship.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for your own soul. Ask yourself: when you are in distress, who do you call upon first? When you make a decision, whose pleasure do you seek? When you are blessed with success, who do you thank? If your answer is anything other than Allah alone, then this verse is a gentle yet firm reminder to purify your faith. The beauty of Islam is that it calls you to a pure, untainted relationship with your Creator—a relationship free from intermediaries, free from superstition, and free from the shackles of false devotion. Embrace this purity, and you will find a peace that transcends all worldly concerns. Allah is the Only One worthy of your worship, and He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Turn to Him alone, and He will never abandon you.
