The Interpretation:
On the Day when the final decree is executed — when the people of Paradise have entered their eternal bliss and the people of Hellfire have been cast into their torment — Satan will stand before his followers and deliver a speech that exposes his true nature and shatters every illusion they held about him. This is a moment of ultimate clarity, when all masks fall and the reality of every relationship is laid bare.
Satan will say: "Indeed, Allah made you a promise — a promise of truth. He promised you resurrection, accountability, Paradise for the righteous, and Hellfire for the wicked. He fulfilled every word of His promise, for He is the Most Truthful, the Most Faithful to His covenant. As for me, I made you promises too — promises of falsehood. I told you there is no resurrection, no reckoning, no Paradise, and no Fire. I promised you that your desires would lead you to success and that following me would bring you security. But I broke every promise. I deceived you, and you believed me. Now you see the result of your trust in me."
Then Satan will absolve himself of any compulsion, saying: "I had no authority over you. I did not force you, nor did I possess any power to compel you into disbelief. I had no proof, no evidence, no argument that could justify your following me. All I did was call you — I whispered temptations, I decorated sin, I made evil appear attractive, and I cast doubts into your hearts. And you responded. You answered my call willingly, eagerly, without hesitation. So do not blame me for your ruin — blame yourselves. You chose to listen to me over your Lord. You preferred my whispers over His revelation. You followed your desires instead of His guidance."
Satan will then declare his complete disassociation from them: "I cannot save you from the punishment of Allah, and you cannot save me from it either. I am not your rescuer, and you are not mine. Every bond of loyalty and alliance between us is now severed. I disbelieve in your having made me a partner with Allah in obedience during your worldly life. When you obeyed me instead of Him, you elevated me to a status I never claimed for myself. I never asked for your worship or your absolute obedience. I now renounce all of it."
And Satan will conclude with a statement that serves as a universal truth: "Indeed, the wrongdoers — those who turned away from the truth, who followed falsehood, who associated partners with Allah — for them is a painful punishment."
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder that Satan is not a friend to anyone. He is an enemy who uses you for his own purposes and then abandons you when you need him most. His ultimate goal is not your success but your destruction. Yet, the Most Merciful Allah has warned us clearly and given us the means to protect ourselves. He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and given us the gift of reason and free will. The choice is ours. If we respond to the call of truth, we will find a Friend who never abandons us — Allah, the Most Loving, the Most Faithful to His promise. He has promised Paradise to those who believe and do righteous deeds, and His promise is true. So let us not be among those who trade an eternal garden for a fleeting whisper of deception. Let us answer the call of our Lord, for His promise is the promise of truth, and His reward is the reward of everlasting bliss.
