- الْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ (Al-Qawl ath-Thabit): The firm and steadfast word — referring to the testimony of faith: *Lā ilāha illa Allāh* (there is no god but Allah) and that Muhammad is His Messenger, along with all that this entails from the true religion.
- فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا (Fi al-hayat ad-dunya): In the life of this world — meaning throughout one's earthly existence, at the moment of death, and in the grave.
- وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ (Wa fi al-akhirah): And in the Hereafter — including the questioning in the grave (the barzakh) and the Day of Resurrection.

- الظَّالِمِينَ (Adh-Dhalimin): The wrongdoers — specifically those who commit shirk (associating partners with Allah) and persist in disbelief and transgression.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse reveals a profound divine principle: Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, grants steadfastness and firmness to those who believe. The "firm word" is the testimony of faith — *Lā ilāha illa Allah* — and everything that follows from it: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree, both the good and the difficult aspects of it. This is not merely a verbal declaration; it is a conviction that settles deep in the heart and manifests in action.
Allah strengthens the believers with this firm word in the life of this world — He keeps them unwavering upon their faith through trials, temptations, and hardships. They do not waver when faced with doubts, nor do they stumble when confronted with desires or fears. This steadfastness continues until the very moment of death, where the believer is blessed with a good ending, and then extends into the grave, where the two angels (Munkar and Nakir) question the deceased. At that critical moment, Allah inspires the believer with the correct answer: "My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad, peace be upon him." This divine support continues into the Hereafter, where the believer will be firm on the Day of Judgment, crossing the bridge and entering Paradise by Allah's grace.
As for the wrongdoers — those who oppressed themselves by associating partners with Allah and rejecting His guidance — Allah leaves them to their misguidance. He does not grant them firmness, and when they are questioned in their graves, they will be confused and unable to answer correctly. Their hearts were blind in this world, so they will be blind in the Hereafter. This is not an injustice from Allah; rather, it is the natural consequence of their own choices, for they turned away from the truth when it was clear to them.
Then the verse concludes with a powerful statement: "And Allah does whatever He wills." This affirms Allah's absolute sovereignty and perfect wisdom. He guides whom He wills out of His grace and mercy, and He leaves astray whom He wills out of His justice. No one can question His decree, and no one can object to His wisdom. He is free from any obligation to anyone, yet His mercy encompasses all things.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful and reassuring message for every believer. It tells you that your faith is not left to your own weak efforts alone — Allah Himself supports you, strengthens you, and keeps you firm. When you sincerely declare *Lā ilāha illa Allah* and live by it, Allah takes it upon Himself to protect your heart from doubt and your steps from deviation. He will be with you in the darkest moments of your life and in the loneliest moment in your grave.
So hold fast to this firm word. Let it be the anchor of your soul. Repeat it with your tongue, believe it with your heart, and act upon it with your limbs. And know that the same Allah who keeps the believers firm is the One who says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir 40:60). Turn to Him, seek His help, and He will never abandon you — in this life, in your grave, and on the Day you meet Him. This is the promise of the One who never breaks His promise.
