Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Andād (أندادًا): Equals, rivals, or counterparts — referring to false deities or partners that the polytheists associated with Allah in worship.
- Sabīlihi (سبيله): His path — meaning the straight path of monotheism (Tawḥīd) and obedience to Allah.
- Tamattaʿū (تمتعوا): Enjoy yourselves — an imperative here carrying a tone of stern warning and challenge.
- Maṣīrukum (مصيركم): Your final destination or ultimate return.
Tafsir (Explanation):
These polytheists did not merely commit shirk (associating partners with Allah) for themselves alone; they actively set up false deities as rivals to Allah and called others to worship them, seeking to mislead people away from the path of truth — the path of pure monotheism and submission to Allah alone. They became agents of misguidance, spreading falsehood and doubt to turn hearts away from their Creator.
Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to address them with a decisive and powerful response: "Enjoy yourselves!" This is not a permission or approval of their ways, but rather a stern challenge and a warning wrapped in irony. It means: "If you insist on your disbelief and your efforts to mislead others, then taste the fleeting pleasures of this worldly life — but know with certainty that your journey ends in the Fire."
This is a threat and a promise of punishment. The enjoyment they seek is temporary, vanishing like a mirage, while the Fire is eternal and ever-present. Their final destination is none other than the blazing Hellfire — there is no escape and no other refuge for them.
Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. How can anyone trade the eternal bliss of Paradise for a handful of fleeting worldly pleasures? The polytheists of old devoted their lives to misleading others, yet their end was destruction. Today, the call to misguidance takes many forms — false ideologies, materialistic philosophies, and distractions that pull the heart away from Allah. But the promise of Allah remains true: whoever turns away from His path will ultimately face the Fire.
Let this verse be a wake-up call for every soul. Do not be deceived by the temporary glitter of this world, and do not follow those who call you away from the straight path. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought the clearest guidance, and the Qur'an is the ultimate truth. Embrace it before the appointed time arrives, for when death comes, no enjoyment will avail you, and no intercessor will save you except the mercy of Allah — which is attained through faith and righteous deeds.
Choose the path that leads to eternal success, and be among those who call others to goodness rather than misguidance. For indeed, the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
