Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, say to the people — as a warning and a wake-up call — "Shall We tell you who are the greatest losers in their deeds?" This is a rhetorical question posed by Allah to grab attention and stir the mind. It is not a question of ignorance, but a question that introduces a shocking truth: there are people who strive, toil, and work hard, yet all their efforts are wasted and bring them nothing but loss. They think they are doing good, building something meaningful, but in reality, they are destroying their own chances of success in the Hereafter.
This verse sets the stage for what follows — describing those who reject faith, follow their desires, and perform deeds without the foundation of belief in Allah and His Messenger. Their deeds are like scattered dust: no weight, no value, no reward. Despite their diligence, they are the most unfortunate because they invested everything in the wrong currency.
The beauty of this verse lies in its mercy: Allah does not leave people in ignorance. He lovingly warns them before it is too late, giving them the chance to correct their course. It is an invitation to self-reflection — to ask ourselves: Are my deeds built on the right foundation? Am I among those who will be told, "Your efforts were in vain," or among those whose deeds will be accepted and rewarded?
This is a call to every soul to examine its priorities, to align its actions with the truth, and to seek Allah's pleasure above all else. For the one who loses his deeds in this world has lost everything, but the one who secures his deeds through faith and sincerity has gained the eternal success that never fades.
