📖 English Meaning
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Mathal" (مَثَل): A parable or similitude — a vivid illustration that makes an abstract truth tangible.
  • "Hasheem" (هَشِيم): Dry, brittle, crushed fragments — the remains of vegetation that has withered and broken apart.
  • "Tadhroohu" (تَذْرُوهُ): To scatter and disperse — the action of winds blowing something fragile in all directions.
  • "Muqtadir" (مُقْتَدِر): The One who has complete, unrestricted power and ability over all things, with nothing beyond His reach.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, present to those who take pride in their worldly possessions and status a parable that strips away all illusion. The life of this world — with all its allure, wealth, and fleeting pleasures — is like rain that We send down from the sky. The earth drinks it, and suddenly it bursts forth with lush, vibrant vegetation of every kind, intertwining and flourishing. To the onlooker, it seems full of life and permanence. Yet, within a short span, that same greenery dries up, becomes brittle, and crumbles into fragments. Then the winds come and scatter those fragments in every direction, until nothing remains but a memory. The land returns to what it was — bare and desolate.

This is the reality of the worldly life: it blooms for a moment, deceives the eye with its beauty, and then vanishes without trace. Those who place their trust in it are building on shifting sand. But Allah — glorified and exalted — is Powerful over all things. He alone gives life and causes death; He brings forth the spring and then turns it to autumn; He raises nations and brings them low. Nothing escapes His command, and His power is absolute and perfect. So let the wise heart not be fooled by the temporary glitter of this world, but instead invest in what remains forever — the pleasure of Allah and the everlasting life of the Hereafter. For the One who created this fleeting scene before you is the same One who will bring you back, and His promise is true. Let this parable awaken your heart, soften your attachment to the temporary, and turn your longing toward the eternal — for the believer who understands this truth lives with a light heart, unburdened by the love of a world that is destined to fade.

📜 Verse 43-47 — Al-Kahf

And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.
There the authority is [completely] for Allah, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
And [warn of] the Day when We will remove the mountains and you will see the earth prominent, and We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone.
