Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āmanū (آمَنُوا): To believe sincerely in Allah, His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Qur'an.
  • Wattaqaw (وَاتَّقَوْا): To be mindful of Allah, obey His commands, and abstain from what He has forbidden.
  • Mathūbah (مَثُوبَةٌ): Reward, recompense, or divine recompense granted by Allah for righteous deeds.
  • Min ʿindillāh (مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ): From Allah Himself — emphasizing the divine source and supreme value of that reward.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses the People of the Book, particularly the Jews of Madinah, who had turned to sorcery and deception to undermine the truth. Allah informs them — and all of humanity — that had they truly believed in Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and had they guarded themselves against disbelief, hypocrisy, and the practice of magic, then the reward stored with Allah would have been far better for them than anything they had gained through their worldly schemes and forbidden practices.

The verse gently but firmly reminds them that the fleeting gains of this world — wealth, status, or the illusion of power through sorcery — are nothing compared to the everlasting reward that Allah bestows upon the believers who are conscious of Him. That reward is not merely material; it is the pleasure of Allah, forgiveness of sins, and entry into Paradise. The verse concludes with a profound statement: *"If only they had known"* — meaning, had they possessed true, certain knowledge of what awaits the believers, they would never have chosen the path of disbelief and sin.

This is a call to reflection: true knowledge is not merely intellectual awareness, but a knowledge that transforms the heart and guides one's actions. Had they truly known the value of faith and piety, they would have rushed toward it, leaving behind all that is worthless.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul: whatever we chase in this world — whether it be wealth, prestige, or fleeting pleasures — can never compare to what Allah has prepared for those who believe and remain conscious of Him. The reward from Allah is not just "better"; it is *khayr* — absolutely and unconditionally good, in this life and the next. So let us ask ourselves: are we investing our lives in what truly lasts? Are we prioritizing Allah's reward over the temporary glitter of this world? The door of faith and righteousness is open to everyone, and the One who calls us to it is the Most Generous, the Most Merciful. He does not ask us for our wealth or our perfection — He asks us for our hearts, our sincerity, and our willingness to turn back to Him. And in return, He offers what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.

📜 Verse 101-105 — Al-Baqarah

And when a messenger from Allah came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained].
And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
And if they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
