Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Rāʿinā (رَاعِنَا): Literally meaning "take care of us" or "listen to us," but the Jews used it as a wordplay to mock the Prophet ﷺ, twisting it to imply foolishness or stupidity (ruʿūnah).
  • Unẓurnā (انظُرْنَا): Meaning "look at us" or "wait for us," a respectful and safe alternative that carries the same intended meaning without any offensive undertones.
  • Asmaʿū (وَاسْمَعُوا): "Listen" — meaning to hear and obey with full attention and submission.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have believed! Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, teaches you the etiquettes of speech and interaction with His beloved Messenger ﷺ. He commands you not to use the word "Rāʿinā" when addressing the Prophet ﷺ, because although it was a common phrase among the Arabs meaning "listen to us" or "take care of us," the enemies of Islam — the Jews — maliciously twisted it. They would pronounce it with a slight distortion, intending to mock the Prophet ﷺ and call him foolish (ruʿūnah) in their language. They found this a cunning way to insult him while appearing to use a normal word. So Allah, in His protective care for His Messenger and for the purity of the believers' tongues, forbade this word entirely — closing the door to any ambiguity or misuse.

Instead, Allah commands you to say: "Unẓurnā" — meaning "look at us" or "wait for us so we may understand what you say." This word conveys the same meaning perfectly, without any possibility of being twisted or abused. This teaches us a profound lesson: a believer must be careful in choosing words, avoiding even the appearance of evil or anything that could be misused by enemies. Islam is a religion of wisdom and precision — it does not merely forbid what is clearly wrong, but also blocks all paths that could lead to harm.

Then Allah says: "And listen" — meaning listen to the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ with attentive hearts, ready to obey and implement. True listening is not just with the ears, but with the mind and soul — it is listening that leads to action and submission.

Finally, Allah warns: "And for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment." This is a stern reminder to those who mock the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and reject the truth — that their end will be severe. The Jews who used this word to insult the Prophet ﷺ, and all disbelievers who persist in their arrogance, will face a painful torment in the Hereafter.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful example of how Islam elevates its followers — teaching them noble manners, precise speech, and respect for their Prophet ﷺ. It shows that Allah does not leave His believers ignorant; He guides them even in the smallest details of daily interaction. Imagine a religion that cares so deeply about the words you use — how much more does it care about your heart, your actions, and your relationship with your Creator?

This verse also reveals the wisdom of Islamic law — the principle of *sadd al-dharāʾiʿ* (blocking the means to evil). Even a permissible word was replaced when it became a tool for mockery. How beautiful is this religion that protects its followers from harm before it even occurs!

And notice the mercy of Allah: He did not simply forbid "Rāʿinā" without providing an alternative. He gave the believers "Unẓurnā" — a word that is safe, respectful, and equally effective. This is the way of Allah: He never prohibits something without granting something better. When He forbids sin, He opens the doors of halal. When He closes a harmful path, He paves a safer one.

Let us take this lesson to heart: as Muslims, we must be mindful of our words, especially when addressing the Prophet ﷺ and the scholars of Islam. And more broadly, we should always choose words that build bridges, not walls — words that reflect the beauty of our faith. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." This verse is a living application of that noble guidance.

May Allah make us among those who listen and obey, and who honor His Messenger ﷺ with the best of words and deeds. Ameen.

📜 Verse 102-106 — Al-Baqarah

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
103وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ ۖ لَّوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
And if they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
104يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقُولُوا رَاعِنَا وَقُولُوا انظُرْنَا وَاسْمَعُوا ۗ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
106۞ مَا نَنسَخْ مِنْ آيَةٍ أَوْ نُنسِهَا نَأْتِ بِخَيْرٍ مِّنْهَا أَوْ مِثْلِهَا ۗ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?
