Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ – The turning of your face (i.e., your gaze) repeatedly toward the sky, awaiting revelation.
- شَطْرَ – Toward, in the direction of.
- الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ – The Sacred Mosque in Makkah, referring specifically to the Ka'bah.
- أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ – Those who were given the Scripture (the Jews and Christians).
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, We have seen the turning of your face toward the sky, time after time, as you yearned and waited for the command regarding the direction of prayer (qiblah). You longed for a qiblah that would be dear to your heart — and indeed, your Lord responded to that longing. So We will surely turn you toward a qiblah that pleases you: the Sacred Mosque in Makkah. Therefore, turn your face toward it in prayer, and wherever you are — O believers — in the east or the west, on land or at sea, turn your faces toward that blessed direction when you stand before your Lord in prayer.
This command was not a random change; it was a divine mercy and a fulfillment of the Prophet's deep desire. It also served as a test of obedience for the believers, who submitted wholeheartedly to Allah's command, and a distinction between those who truly follow the Messenger and those who merely follow their whims.
And indeed, those who were given the Scripture — the Jews and the Christians — know with certainty that this change of qiblah to the Ka'bah is the truth from their Lord. It is confirmed in their own books, for their prophets had foretold that the final Messenger would pray toward two qiblahs. Yet despite this knowledge, many of them denied it out of arrogance and envy.
And Allah is not unaware of what they do. He sees their plots, their objections, and their attempts to mislead. He is fully aware of every deed, and He will recompense them with perfect justice — in this world and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Beloved Muslim, this verse carries a profound lesson: Allah sees your longing, your turning, and your sincere seeking — just as He saw the Prophet's turning toward the sky. When you raise your hands in supplication and turn your heart toward your Lord, He is not unaware. He hears, He sees, and He responds in the way that is best for you. The change of qiblah teaches us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, replaces what is good with what is better for His servants. So trust Him, obey His commands with a content heart, and know that wherever you are on this earth, your face toward the Sacred Mosque is a symbol of your unity with millions of believers worldwide — all facing one direction, all worshipping one God, all following one Messenger. This is the beauty of Islam: a bond that transcends distance, race, and time. Let this verse strengthen your love for your faith and your connection to the House of Allah, and let it remind you that Allah's knowledge encompasses all — so be ever mindful of your deeds, for nothing escapes Him.
