Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Andād (أندادًا): Rivals, equals, or counterparts. Here, it refers to false deities, idols, or any beings that people elevate to the level of Allah in love, reverence, and obedience.
- Kaḥubbillāh (كحُبِّ الله): Loving them as one loves Allah—i.e., giving them the same degree of devotion and affection that is due exclusively to Allah.
- Ashaddu ḥubban (أشدُّ حُبًّا): Stronger, deeper, and more intense in love.
- Al-Quwwah (القوة): Absolute power, might, and dominion.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Despite the clear signs and undeniable proofs of Allah’s Oneness and His exclusive right to worship, there are among mankind those who take rivals besides Allah. They set up idols, statues, saints, or any objects of devotion and love them with a love that should be reserved for Allah alone. They revere them, fear them, and turn to them in hope and supplication, as if these creations share in Allah’s divinity. This is the essence of shirk—associating partners with the Creator.
Yet, the believers—those who have truly submitted their hearts to Allah—love Him far more intensely than these polytheists love their false gods. Why? Because the believers have purified their love entirely for Allah. They love Him in times of ease and hardship, in prosperity and adversity. Their love is not conditional; it is a love born of gratitude, awe, and deep awareness of His infinite mercy and majesty. As for the disbelievers, their love is shallow and self-serving—they love their idols only when things go well, but in times of real distress, they forget their idols and cry out only to Allah, the One who truly answers.
Now, imagine the scene on the Day of Judgment: the wrongdoers—those who oppressed their own souls by associating partners with Allah—will witness the punishment with their own eyes. At that moment, they will realize, with absolute certainty, that all power, all might, and all dominion belong to Allah alone. There will be no intercessor, no idol, no helper. They will see that Allah’s punishment is severe beyond imagination, and they will wish they had never taken those false gods. But by then, it will be too late—the opportunity for repentance will have passed.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: our hearts were created to love, and that love must be directed to its rightful Owner. When we place our ultimate trust, hope, and devotion in Allah alone, we find a peace and strength that no idol or false object of worship can ever provide. The love of the believer is not blind—it is rooted in knowledge, certainty, and a personal relationship with the Creator who sustains us every moment. Let this be a call to purify your heart: check where your deepest love lies. If it is for Allah, then you are on the path of true success. And if you find any rival in your heart, know that Allah is the Most Forgiving, and He welcomes those who turn back to Him with sincere repentance before the day comes when no excuse will avail.
