Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tabarra'a (تَبَرَّأَ): To disown, dissociate, or declare oneself free from someone or something.
  • Allatheena ittubi'oo (الَّذِينَ اتُّبِعُوا): Those who were followed — i.e., the leaders, chiefs, and heads of misguidance whom others blindly obeyed.
  • Allatheena ittaba'oo (الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوا): Those who followed — i.e., the common people who imitated their leaders in disbelief and sin.
  • Taqatta'at bihim al-asbab (تَقَطَّعَتْ بِهِمُ الْأَسْبَابُ): The ties, connections, and means (of salvation) were cut off from them — referring to every bond they relied upon in the worldly life, such as kinship, friendship, and mutual support.

Explanation of the Verse:

Imagine standing on the brink of the Hereafter, witnessing with your own eyes the terrifying reality of the punishment — the fire, the chains, the regret. In that very moment, the false leaders whom people worshipped, obeyed, and followed into misguidance will publicly and completely disown their followers. They will say, in essence: "We are not responsible for you. We never commanded you to disobey Allah. You chose to follow us of your own will." And the followers, in turn, will realize that their leaders have abandoned them entirely.

At that moment, every bond that connected them in the worldly life — the ties of blood, the alliances of friendship, the shared interests, the mutual support, the promises of help and intercession — will be severed completely, as if they never existed. All the "ropes" they held onto for salvation will snap, leaving them with nothing but despair and utter loss. The very relationships they thought would save them will become sources of mutual blame and enmity.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the ultimate reality: on the Day of Judgment, no one can save another. Every false hope, every reliance on created beings, and every bond built upon disobedience to Allah will vanish into thin air. The only thing that will remain is one's own deeds and one's relationship with Allah — nothing else.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this scene is not merely a story of the past or a distant future event — it is a warning for you and me today. The leaders of misguidance exist in every era: those who call to disbelief, immorality, and the rejection of Allah's commands. They may be celebrities, intellectuals, politicians, or even close relatives and friends. But on that Day, they will be the first to abandon their followers, leaving them to face the consequences alone.

So ask yourself: Who am I following in my life? Whose footsteps am I treading upon? If I am following someone who leads me away from Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, then I am heading toward this very scene of regret and severance. But if I follow the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, then my bonds are with Allah Himself — and He never abandons those who hold fast to Him.

Let this verse be a wake-up call to purify your intentions, choose your companions wisely, and attach your heart only to Allah. For on that Day, every tie will be cut except the tie of faith and righteous deeds. May Allah make us among those who hold firmly to His rope and never rely on anyone but Him.

📜 Verse 164-168 — Al-Baqarah

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment.
[And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship],
Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
