The Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, strikes a profound and vivid parable for the hypocrites—those who outwardly declare faith but inwardly harbor disbelief. Their state is likened to a group of people stranded in the pitch-black darkness of a desolate night, where no light exists and no path is visible. One among them kindles a mighty fire, and as its flames leap and crackle, it casts a brilliant glow, illuminating everything around them. For a moment, they feel secure, comforted by the warmth and the sight of the world around them.
But then, at the very peak of its brightness, Allah extinguishes that light—not merely the fire, but the very *light* itself, leaving them in an even deeper, more suffocating darkness than before. The fire that once guided them now leaves behind only its scorching heat and smoke, and they are plunged into multiple layers of darkness, unable to see anything at all—neither the path ahead, nor the dangers around them, nor any way out.
This is the exact condition of the hypocrites: they "lit the fire" of faith with their tongues, claiming belief in the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and mixing with the believers. They benefited from the protection, the rights, and the social standing of the Muslim community—just as the travelers benefited from the fire's light. But when death comes, or when trials and tribulations arise, their inner disbelief is exposed. Allah removes the light of sincere faith from their hearts, leaving them in the darkness of doubt, confusion, and misguidance. They are left wandering blindly, neither truly with the believers nor with the disbelievers, and they have no hope of finding their way back to the truth.
This parable teaches us a crucial lesson: Faith is not a matter of mere words; it is a light that Allah places in the heart. It is a light that must be nurtured through sincere belief, righteous actions, and unwavering trust in Allah. Whoever plants hypocrisy in their heart will find that their light is but a temporary flicker, destined to be extinguished at the moment they need it most.
A Call to Sincerity:
O servant of Allah! Reflect on this parable and examine your own heart. Is your faith a genuine, burning light that guides you through the darkness of this world? Or is it merely a borrowed flame, lit for the eyes of others? Allah does not look at your outward appearance or your claims—He looks at your heart and your deeds. Strive to be among those whose faith is deeply rooted, whose light shines brightly in this life and illuminates their path to Paradise in the Hereafter. For the light of true faith is a gift from Allah, and He preserves it for those who are sincere.
