Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fitnah (فتنة): In this context, it means polytheism (shirk), disbelief, and the persecution of Muslims that seeks to turn them away from their religion.
  • Adwan (عدوان): Transgression, aggression, or injustice.
  • Zalimun (ظالمون): Those who persist in wrongdoing, disbelief, and oppression.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, continue your struggle against those who oppose the truth and wage war against you, until there remains no fitnah—no persecution of believers, no polytheism, and no attempt to turn people away from the path of Allah. The goal is that worship and devotion become purely and exclusively for Allah alone, with no partner associated with Him and no rival worshipped besides Him. This is the ultimate purpose of the believer's striving: that the earth be free from oppression, and that hearts bow only to their Creator.

However, if your enemies cease their hostility, abandon their disbelief, and stop their aggression, then you must immediately stop fighting them. There is to be no transgression against those who have repented and made peace. Retribution and punishment are reserved only for those who persist in injustice and continue their aggression—those who refuse to relent and remain upon their oppressive ways. In this, there is a profound lesson in justice and mercy: Islam does not seek conflict for its own sake, but rather to establish freedom of belief and to protect the weak from tyranny.

A Call to Reflection:

How beautiful is this divine guidance! It teaches us that the ultimate aim of every struggle is peace, justice, and the freedom to worship Allah sincerely. When the enemy lays down their arms and turns to the truth, the believer responds with mercy and restraint. This is the character of Islam—a religion that commands justice, forbids oppression, and opens its doors to all who seek the light of guidance. Let us thank Allah for this perfect way of life, and let us strive to embody its noble principles in every aspect of our lives, so that we may be among those who establish truth and uphold justice in this world and the next.

📜 Verse 191-195 — Al-Baqarah

And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.
[Fighting in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
