Word Meanings:

  • Al-Shahr al-Haram (الشهر الحرام): The sacred month in which fighting was prohibited, specifically referring here to the month in which the Muslims were prevented from performing ‘Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) by the polytheists.
  • Al-Hurumat (الحرمات): Sacred things, including the sacred month, the sacred city (Makkah), and the state of Ihram (ritual consecration during pilgrimage).
  • Qisas (قصاص): Equitable retribution or just retaliation, meaning that a violation of a sacred thing is met with a proportionate response.
  • I’tada (اعتدى): To transgress, aggress, or commit an act of injustice against someone.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse establishes a profound principle of justice and balance in Islam. Allah addresses the believers who were distressed by the polytheists’ prevention of them from entering the Sacred Mosque in the month of Dhul-Qa‘dah in the sixth year after the Hijrah (the year of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah). Allah reassures them that the sacred month in which they were granted entry and performed their ‘Umrah in the following year is a just compensation for the sacred month in which they were unjustly barred. Thus, the sanctity of the sacred months is preserved, and any violation of that sanctity is met with an equivalent response.

Allah then expands the principle: all sacred things—whether the sacred city, the sacred months, or the state of Ihram—are governed by the law of equitable retribution. Whoever violates a sacred thing, let them be met with a proportionate consequence, without exceeding the bounds of fairness. This is not a license for aggression, but a measured response to injustice.

The verse then gives a clear directive: “So whoever transgresses against you, then transgress against him in the same manner as he transgressed against you.” This means that if the enemy attacks you, you may defend yourselves and respond with an equivalent measure of force—no more, no less. The word “transgress” here is used in a reciprocal sense, meaning to repel aggression with a like response, as a form of just retaliation. It is a permission to defend oneself, not an encouragement to initiate harm.

Finally, Allah commands: “And fear Allah and know that Allah is with the righteous.” This is the ultimate safeguard. Even when you are entitled to retaliate, you must remain conscious of Allah and His limits. Do not let anger or vengeance drive you beyond what is just. The believer’s response must always be measured, disciplined, and rooted in taqwa (God-consciousness). And Allah’s support, protection, and victory are guaranteed for those who uphold righteousness and remain within His boundaries.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse beautifully teaches us that Islam is a religion of balance and justice. It does not leave the believer weak or passive in the face of oppression, nor does it allow unchecked vengeance. Instead, it sets a dignified middle path: you have the right to defend yourself and reclaim what is rightfully yours, but you must do so with fairness and restraint. This is a mercy from Allah, for it protects both the individual and society from chaos and injustice.

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine guidance. Allah, the Most Merciful, knows that humans may face aggression and injustice, so He grants permission for a measured response—yet He immediately reminds us of His presence with the righteous. This is an invitation to elevate ourselves above mere retaliation and to embody the highest moral standards. When you respond to harm with fairness, and when you restrain yourself from excess, you demonstrate true strength of character. And know with certainty that Allah is with those who fear Him and uphold justice—He will never abandon them, and He will grant them success in this life and the Hereafter. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of balance, justice, and God-consciousness in all your affairs.

📜 Verse 192-196 — Al-Baqarah

And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.
[Fighting in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
