Word Meanings:
- "intahaw" (انتَهَوْا): They desist, cease, or stop — referring to abandoning their disbelief (kufr) and their aggression in fighting the believers, particularly at the Sacred Mosque.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse follows the command to fight those who aggress against you at the Sacred Mosque, but it immediately opens the door of mercy and forgiveness. If the disbelievers and aggressors stop their hostility, abandon their polytheism, and turn away from fighting you, then you too must cease fighting them. Do not pursue them or hold their past sins against them.
The verse then delivers a profoundly comforting message: Allah is Ghafoor (All-Forgiving) and Raheem (Most Merciful). His forgiveness is vast enough to cover all that they committed before — whether it was disbelief, idolatry, or aggression against the believers. When a person sincerely repents and turns back to Allah, He does not punish them for their previous deeds. Instead, He welcomes them with His mercy, erasing their past and granting them a fresh start. He does not hasten to punish those who turn to Him in repentance; rather, His mercy prevails over His wrath.
This verse beautifully demonstrates the balance in Islam between justice and mercy. While fighting is permitted in self-defense and to protect the sanctity of the Sacred Mosque, the ultimate goal is not vengeance but the establishment of peace and the guidance of hearts. The moment the enemy inclines toward peace and abandons their hostility, the believer must respond with forgiveness and leave the matter to Allah, who is the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, see how Islam opens its doors wide to every soul that returns to its Lord! No matter how great the sin, no matter how long the path of error, the moment you stop and turn back, Allah's forgiveness is there — greater than your past, more merciful than any judge. This is the beauty of faith: it never despairs of Allah's mercy. If you have been far from Allah, or if your past weighs heavily upon you, know that your Lord is Ghafoor and Raheem. He does not turn away the one who knocks at His door. Come back to Him today, and let His mercy wash away your past, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful — and His love for the repentant is beyond measure.
