Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yafqahū (يَفْقَهُوا): They understand, comprehend, or grasp the meaning of something with clarity and insight.
  • Qawlī (قَوْلِي): My speech, my words, or my message.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of Prophet Musa's (Moses, peace be upon him) heartfelt supplication to his Lord as he prepared for the monumental task of confronting Pharaoh. After asking Allah to expand his chest (grant him patience and confidence) and to ease his task, Musa then pleads: "That they may understand my speech."

This request reveals a profound truth about effective communication: the message is only complete when it is received and understood. Musa (peace be upon him) was not merely asking for eloquence for its own sake—he was asking that his words would penetrate the hearts and minds of his listeners. He knew that the truth of Allah's message, no matter how powerful, would have no effect if the people could not comprehend what he was saying. This is why he had earlier mentioned the knot in his tongue (a speech impediment he had since childhood) and now asks that it be loosened so that his words would flow clearly and be understood.

This dua teaches us that when we convey the truth—whether it is the message of Islam, an advice, or a call to goodness—we must strive for clarity and sincerity. The goal is not to impress with complex rhetoric, but to ensure that the listener truly grasps the meaning. Understanding is the bridge between hearing and believing, and Musa knew that this bridge must be strong.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, look at how the Prophet of Allah, Musa (peace be upon him), turned to his Lord in every detail of his mission. He did not rely on his own abilities alone; he sought Allah's help in his speech, his heart, and his companions. This is a beautiful lesson for every Muslim who wishes to share the beauty of Islam: we must prepare ourselves, seek Allah's assistance, and speak with wisdom and clarity. When you invite others to the path of Allah, remember that your words are a trust—make them clear, kind, and sincere, so that hearts may open to the light of truth. And just as Allah answered Musa's prayer, He will surely guide and support those who strive in His cause with pure intentions. Let this verse inspire you to perfect your own communication, whether in calling to Allah, teaching your family, or spreading goodness in your community—for the most beloved speech to Allah is that which is truthful, clear, and understood.
