Word Meanings:

  • Dhikr (ذِكر): A reminder or admonition; here it refers to the Qur'an.
  • Muḥdath (مُحدَث): Newly revealed or renewed; meaning something that comes fresh and timely, not old or outdated.
  • Yalʿabūn (يَلعَبون): Playing, jesting, or treating something with frivolity and mockery.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid picture of the disbelievers' attitude toward divine revelation. Every time a new portion of the Qur'an descends upon them—fresh, living, and full of guidance—they do not receive it with the seriousness it deserves. Instead, they listen to it with hearts full of heedlessness and tongues ready for mockery, treating it as if it were a game or a pastime.

The verse highlights a profound truth: the Qur'an is not a static book from the past; it is a living reminder that speaks to every generation. Each revelation was a new call to awaken their hearts, yet they met it with laughter and disdain. Their listening was not the listening of one who seeks truth, but the listening of one who has already decided to reject—so they heard the words but closed their minds, and saw the signs but turned away.

This behavior reveals a deeper spiritual malady: the disease of arrogance and attachment to worldly distractions. When the truth arrives, it demands a response—either acceptance or rejection. The disbelievers chose to mock, thinking this would diminish the Qur'an's power, but in doing so, they only harmed themselves.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own relationship with the Qur'an. When you hear its verses, do you listen with a present heart, eager to understand and apply? Or do you let your mind wander, treating it as mere background noise? The Qur'an is not a book to be played with; it is a divine address to you personally. Every time you open it, Allah is speaking to you anew. Respond to it with humility, sincerity, and love, for it is the key to your success in this life and the next. Let your heart be soft, your intention pure, and your ears attentive—so that the reminder transforms you, rather than passing you by like the wind.
