📖 English Meaning
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment.

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ifk (الإفك): The most severe form of falsehood and slander; it refers to the heinous accusation made against the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).
  • Usbah (عصبة): A group or band of people united in a common cause.
  • Kibrah (كبره): The greater part or the main burden of the matter; the one who initiated and bore the greatest responsibility for the slander.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses the incident of the slander (Al-Ifk) — a painful trial that struck the Muslim community in Madinah. A group of hypocrites and misguided individuals spread a vicious lie against Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), accusing her of immorality. Allah informs us that those who brought this monstrous falsehood were a group from among you, O believers — not strangers to your society, but people who claimed to be part of your ranks. This was a severe test for the believers, and the Prophet's household in particular.

Allah then delivers a profound reassurance: "Do not consider it a harm for you; rather, it is good for you." At first glance, the slander seemed like a disaster — it wounded the honor of the Prophet's family, caused division, and spread doubt. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, turned this trial into a source of immense good. Through this incident, the innocence of Aisha was publicly proclaimed by divine revelation, elevating her status and purifying her reputation for all time. The believers were distinguished from the hypocrites, their faith was strengthened through patience and trust in Allah, and their sins were expiated through the hardship they endured. What the enemies of truth intended as evil became a means of raising the ranks of the righteous and exposing the wicked.

Then Allah declares that every person who participated in spreading this slander will receive exactly what they earned of sin — no more, no less. Each one will be held accountable according to their role: the one who initiated it, the one who amplified it, and the one who listened and spread it further. Justice is perfect with Allah; no one escapes their responsibility.

Finally, Allah singles out the one who bore the greatest share of this crime — Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the chief of the hypocrites, may Allah curse him. For him, there is a tremendous punishment, both in this world through exposure and disgrace, and in the Hereafter, where he will face the lowest depths of Hellfire for his wickedness.

A Call to the Believers:

This verse carries timeless lessons for every Muslim. When trials come — whether through slander, false accusations, or hardship — do not despair, for Allah can turn what appears to be evil into good for those who trust in Him. The story of Aisha teaches us to guard our tongues, to verify news before spreading it, and to defend the honor of the righteous. It reminds us that Allah is the Protector of His believing servants, and that truth will always prevail over falsehood. Let this be a source of comfort and strength: no matter how dark the clouds of slander may gather, the light of Allah's justice will shine through. And know that your patience and reliance on Allah in times of trial are never wasted — they are investments that yield the greatest rewards in this life and the next.

Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars.
