Word Meanings:
- Lawlā (لولا): Why not / If only — a word of rebuke and admonition, meaning "Why did you not...?"
- Ifk (إفك): A lie, slander, or false accusation — specifically, a fabricated statement that turns truth upside down.
- Mubīn (مبين): Clear, evident, and unmistakable.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah gently but firmly rebukes the believing community for their reaction when they first heard the slanderous accusation against Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). The words "Why did you not..." carry a tone of loving correction — as if to say: "O believers, where was your good opinion of your own people when you needed it most?"
The verse highlights a profound principle: the believers — men and women alike — are like one single body, one soul. When harm is directed at any one of them, it is as though it is directed at all of them. Therefore, when they heard this accusation, they should have instinctively thought well of their fellow believer, assuming her innocence and purity, and said: "This is a clear lie!" — a falsehood so obvious that no one with sound faith and reason could accept it.
The deeper lesson here is a call to good assumption (husn al-dhann) — to think well of others, especially the righteous, and to guard one's tongue from spreading rumors. Islam trains its followers to be a fortress of trust and mutual care, not a marketplace of suspicion and gossip. Imagine the beauty of a community where, when a rumor arises, the first response is not doubt but defense, not suspicion but support.
This verse also teaches us that the honor of a believer is sacred. Just as we protect our own dignity, we must protect the dignity of others. The believers are described as "one soul" — so when you harm your brother or sister, you harm yourself. When you defend them, you defend your own honor.
Let this be a mirror for our own conduct today. In an age of rapid news and viral rumors, how often do we pause to think well of others before judging? How often do we say, "This is a clear lie!" instead of sharing and speculating? The Quran teaches us that faith is not just in the heart — it is in the way we think of others, speak about them, and stand by them.
And the reward of this beautiful conduct is a community filled with peace, trust, and love — a community that reflects the mercy of Allah, who is always ready to forgive those who turn to Him in repentance.
