Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fitan (فتنة): A trial, test, or tribulation—something that distinguishes the sincere from the insincere.
  • Tasbirūn (أتصبرون): Will you remain patient and steadfast upon obedience to Allah despite the trials?

Tafsir (Explanation):

O noble Messenger, do not let the disbelievers’ objections unsettle your heart. They have questioned how a prophet could eat food and walk through the markets like any ordinary human being. Yet this was never a flaw—it was the very pattern of all those whom Allah sent before you. Every single messenger who came prior to you was a human being who ate, drank, and moved among people in their daily affairs. None of them descended as an angel or a being of another nature. This was a deliberate divine choice, for the prophets were sent to guide humanity through example—showing that faith is not a flight from the world, but a way of living within it with righteousness, patience, and devotion.

And in this same verse, Allah reveals a profound wisdom about the nature of human life: He has made some of you a trial for others. The rich are a test for the poor, the healthy a test for the sick, the strong a test for the weak, and the believer a test for the disbeliever. The one who is given wealth is tested—will he be grateful and generous? The one who is deprived is tested—will he be patient and free of envy? The one who is healthy is tested—will he use his strength in obedience? The one who is afflicted is tested—will he remain steadfast? Even the Prophet himself was a trial for his people, for they had to choose whether to accept him or reject him.

Then comes the gentle, probing question: "Will you be patient?" It is as if Allah is saying: I have placed you in this world of contrasts and differences to see which of you will hold firm upon faith, which of you will endure hardship with grace, and which of you will turn away. The patient ones will be rewarded with what no eye has seen and no ear has heard. The impatient ones will face the consequence of their own choice.

And know, O believer, that your Lord is All-Seeing. Nothing escapes His vision—not your hidden struggles, not your silent tears, not your quiet perseverance. He sees the one who remains steadfast under trial and the one who falls into despair. He sees the one who is grateful in abundance and the one who forgets Him in ease. And because He sees all, His justice is perfect, and His reward is certain.

So take heart, dear believer. Your trials are not meaningless—they are the very means by which your rank is elevated and your faith is purified. The prophets before you endured far greater hardships while being human just like you, eating and walking among people. If they could remain patient, so can you. And your Lord, who sees every effort you make, will never let your patience go to waste.

📜 Verse 18-22 — Al-Furqan

They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."
So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.
And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.
And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?" They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [become] insolent with great insolence.
The day they see the angels - no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, "Prevented and inaccessible."
