Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَاءَنَا (do not expect to meet Us): Those who do not believe in the Resurrection and thus have no hope of meeting their Lord, nor do they fear His punishment.
(Why not): A phrase used to express a demand or objection — here, they are saying, "Why was this not done?"
  • أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا الْمَلَائِكَةُ (the angels were sent down to us): They demanded that angels descend to them visibly to confirm the truth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • أَوْ نَرَىٰ رَبَّنَا (or we see our Lord): They even went further, demanding to see Allah Himself with their own eyes — a demand born of arrogance and ignorance.
  • اسْتَكْبَرُوا (they were arrogant): They were filled with pride and self-conceit.
  • عَتَوْا عُتُوًّا كَبِيرًا (they transgressed with great transgression): They exceeded all bounds in their stubbornness, tyranny, and disbelief.

The Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, tells us about the disbelievers who deny the meeting with their Lord and reject the Resurrection. These people, driven by their arrogance and stubbornness, said mockingly and defiantly: "Why were angels not sent down to us to tell us that Muhammad is truthful? Or why do we not see our Lord with our own eyes so that He may directly inform us of his truthfulness?"

They made these demands not out of sincere seeking of guidance, but out of pride and mockery. They thought that by making such impossible demands, they could justify their rejection of the truth. Yet, the reality is that their hearts were sealed with arrogance — they had already decided not to believe, and these demands were merely excuses.

Allah then describes their true state: "They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and transgressed with great transgression." This means their pride had reached its peak, preventing them from accepting the truth, and their tyranny and disbelief had exceeded all limits. They dared to ask for things that even the prophets themselves never asked for — for no human being has ever seen Allah in this worldly life, and the angels do not descend except by Allah's command and for a specific purpose.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on how these people demanded to see Allah with their own eyes before they would believe. Yet, Allah has already shown us His signs everywhere — in the heavens, the earth, in our own creation, and in the revelation of the Qur'an. The Qur'an itself is a living miracle that challenges all of humanity to produce even one chapter like it, and they cannot.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the greatest of all prophets, and Allah supported him with clear miracles and undeniable proofs. The angels did descend — not to the disbelievers, but to the Prophet, bringing revelation and supporting him. And as for seeing Allah, that is the greatest honor reserved for the believers in Paradise, not for those who demand it arrogantly in this world.

So, my dear reader, do not be like those who make excuses to reject the truth. Instead, open your heart to the light of faith. Look at the signs around you, reflect on the beauty of creation, and you will find that the truth of Islam is as clear as the sun in the midday sky. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made the path to Him clear and accessible to all who sincerely seek it. Do not let arrogance and pride — the very traits that destroyed these people — keep you from the greatest success: the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Furqan

So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.
And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.
And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?" They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [become] insolent with great insolence.
The day they see the angels - no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, "Prevented and inaccessible."
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.
