Explanation of the Verse:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is being addressed here with a gentle, probing question: "Do you really think that most of these people hear you with open hearts, or reason with their minds?" The answer implied is a firm "No." They do not listen as those who seek truth, nor do they reflect upon the clear signs and proofs placed before them.
These people are not merely indifferent — they are compared to cattle. Just as cattle have ears but do not understand what they hear, and have eyes but do not ponder what they see, these disbelievers possess faculties of hearing and intellect yet fail to use them for their own guidance. They hear the Qur'an, but it does not penetrate their hearts. They witness miracles and logical arguments, but they do not engage their minds.
Yet the verse goes further: they are not even equal to cattle — they are worse and more astray. Why? Because cattle, at least, follow their natural instinct to benefit themselves: they graze where there is pasture, drink from clean water, and flee from danger. But these people, despite being given intellect, revelation, and prophets, choose what harms them — idolatry, arrogance, and rejection of truth. They are given the highest gift (reason) and use it for the lowest purpose (denial), making their misguidance far more severe than that of animals, which have no such responsibility.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical statement — it is a mirror for every soul. It invites us to ask ourselves: Are we among those who truly hear the call of truth and reflect upon it? Or do we let our desires and habits deafen us, like those described here?
The Qur'an was sent as a mercy and a guide. Every verse is a light that can illuminate your path if you open your heart to it. Do not let your intellect be wasted on trivialities while the greatest questions of existence — where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going — remain unanswered.
The door of guidance is open for you today. The One who created you knows what is best for you, and He has sent you His words out of love and mercy. Respond to Him with a listening ear and a thinking mind, and you will find a peace that no earthly pleasure can match. Do not be like those who had everything and lost everything — be among those who hear, understand, and act, for they are the ones who truly succeed.
