📖 English Meaning
Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mad-da al-thill (مَدَّ الظِّلَّ): Extended and spread the shade.
  • Sākinan (سَاكِنًا): Stationary, fixed, unmoving.
  • Dalīlan (دَلِيلًا): An indicator, a sign that points to something.

Explanation of the Verse:

Have you not reflected, dear reader, upon the magnificent handiwork of your Lord? Look at how He spreads the shade across the earth — from the break of dawn until the rising of the sun — a gentle, cool mercy that blankets the world before the heat of the day intensifies. This is not a random occurrence; it is a deliberate act of divine wisdom and compassion.

Had your Lord willed, He could have made that shade permanent and stationary — a fixed canopy that never moves, never shortens, never changes. But He did not. Instead, He created the sun as a guide and evidence of the shade, for it is through the sun’s movement that the shade lengthens and contracts, appearing and receding in a perfect rhythm. The sun reveals the shade’s existence and its benefits; without light, darkness would be unknown, and without the sun, the shade would have no meaning. Thus, things are known by their opposites, and the greatness of Allah’s creation is displayed in this delicate balance.

This verse invites you to open your heart’s eye — not just your physical sight — and contemplate the universe around you. Every shadow you see, every shift of light, is a living sign pointing to the power and wisdom of Allah alone. He is the One who orchestrates the cosmos with perfect precision, and He alone deserves your worship and gratitude. When you sit in the shade of a tree or feel the coolness of evening, let it remind you of His mercy. When you see the sun rise and the shadows move, let it remind you of His absolute control over all things.

So pause, reflect, and let this simple yet profound phenomenon draw you closer to your Creator. For in the ebb and flow of light and shade, there is a lesson for every heart that is willing to see.

📜 Verse 43-47 — Al-Furqan

Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?
Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.
Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.
Then We hold it in hand for a brief grasp.
And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.
